Why on earth do you want to go to Port Edgar?

The place is a dump, and the last place I would consider going.

I saw a comment about PE on a "Places to visit" website, where someone had added a comment under "Things to do in Port Edgar", which simply said "Leave!"

Sums it up perfectly !

Many years ago I was stationed there when it was the minesweeper base, HMS Lochinvar.

Sounds like nothing's changed much!

Yes, longitude by chippy - travelling west, salt'n'sauce gives way to salt'n'vinegar around about Grangemouth .

Port Edgar is a dump, with more mud than water, but the chandlery is much improved.

I got my berth.
There doesn't seem to be a map on their website

Try it the other way - tell us your berth number and we'll tell you where it is, which way it points and whether it is port or starboard to.

Yes they are an aquired taste but the advice is generaly good and the prices and workmanship for rigging excellent. They were in lunch break range for me so I got to know them and at times we even had a laugh together. Best place to go for honest advice. I agree that the Locker has improved.

Get some good fenders good warps and good shock absorbers. Maybe get in some practice on The Cake Walk at Blackpool as well

Och, that was pontoon A. Pontoon C just lost a few planks that weekend! Good ropes, fenders and an aft spring to hold her off the finger are all you need. Take particular care not to have your mast in alignment with your neighbouring boats - the danger of mast clashes is very real.

Were you on one of the old Ton class minesweepers?

I was in Tay division RNR in my yoof and spent a bit of time on HMS Montrose, ex-Dalswinton.

Then I saw the light, and joined the MN full time!

I was employed in the base workshops and worked on the Ton sweepers 'as required'; not on any one boat in particular.

I also later joined the MN. A different (and better IMO) world.

Now in Turkey and been in the Med for 13 years. Before that wintered in Largs, Crinan, Lossiemouth, Peterhead and Tayport (and been to Port Edgar and Ainster many times). Heard the comparison between West coast and East many times. Sitting here in Turkey reading about the wonderful fish and chips and the pubs and so many things I would say both. Apart from the weather of course they are two of the finest sailing grounds anywhere. But maybe I am just getting nostalgic.
