Hi,
Any Port Edgar folk here.?
I have applied for a berth for next year.
What are the chances of getting one.?
I believe it is easier to get in Largs now Sunsail have gone, as a backup, but it's an extra 2 hours driving.

thx
Howard

Largs is Getting Full

Largs is very near full according to a discussion I had with their Marina Manager yesterday so don't dilly dally as apparently there has been a steady increase in new custom since winter 2008.

For example DDZ Marine (based at Largs) has sold 4 new Motor Boats this year which are berthed at Largs, so I understand. There has also been a number of new yachts berthed this year as well.

Have you asked the marina office? They will know where you are on the waiting list and should have an idea of what their turnover is likely to be.

Each time I went on the waiting list I got a berth. We sailed south last year so I do not have up to date info. Try contacting the PEBHA http://www.portedgarbha.org.uk/ they should have up to date info and let you know who is the best person to contact.

Why on earth do you want to go to Port Edgar?

The place is a dump, and the last place I would consider going.

I saw a comment about PE on a "Places to visit" website, where someone had added a comment under "Things to do in Port Edgar", which simply said "Leave!"

Sums it up perfectly !

Thanks, I'll ask them where I am in the list.
This is an ideal location for us to hone our sailing skills, just 1.5 hours away.

Port Edgar is great for racing - probably more active than Largs. And many enjoy the more challenging cruising, particularly if shallow draft / bilge keel

But wonder where you can be if Largs is 2 hours further ? I would have thought generally the difference is less than that. For me the journey times are circa 1 hour longer, often less, to Largs than PE - and that is from west Edinburgh.

Don't knock it! It's got pontoons, security, electricity, water, onsite chandlery, services, friendly staff, an active yacht club, Cadets and an RYA training centre. Okay, there's no posh yachty stuff and prices to match. Would do me fine. I do prefer a working boat yard to whitewashed marina!

Never kept a boat there but done lots of work for the sailing school and there was always slots available. Just give them a ring.

It is not just where you are on the list, based on that most of us would never get a berth, because many of those on the list above you will have found a berth somewhere else. That is why you need to speak to the guy who allocates the berths not the women in the office. If you are lucky there may be an empty berth now and that would give you a berth next year as long as you start paying now.

Yes PE is not the best marina in the UK, in fact it may be the worst, but the club is good, there is a functioning chandler and sailmaker and another chandler at Granto which can be interesting. It has good communication links and the Forth is a great place to sail.

I doubt Largs would turn you away, as soon as you say " I'll try kip then" they will squeeze you in for sure !!!

clydr cruising must be far superior to east coast - where else can you drop anchor and go ashore for chips

To add to Anstruther where the fish and chips are amongst the best in the UK there is also North Berwich, Dunbar and Eyemouth. All do decent fish suppers, and you get brown sauce.
