I know they aren't that rare, but we had a porpoise alongside us today just as we came into Harwich past Landguard on the yacht track. I haven't seen one for years. Unfortunately it was such a brief sighting I didn't have a chance to grab a camera.

You probably would have found it pretty frustrating. I've got lots of photos of their tails but precious few of any other bits. I'm also a bit jealous as I haven't seen any for a year or two even though I'm now well down-channels.
 
Porpoises

My wife and I saw what we thought were two dolphins swimming together today just north of SW whiting at around 1200. Not sure how to distinguish them from porpoises but it was really uplifting to seem them swimming together...
 
As I understand it we generally see Harbour Porpoises around the Thames Estuary, which are much more timid, and all you'll see is a very rapid surface breach as they breathe.
