So, email sent with photos pointing out the issues.
I haven’t signed anything but I would prefer to pay in full and have a quality job completed.
Their reply was they will come out this week and look at some of the issues raised. Not all!
I suppose it comes down to each others personal opinion of what’s exceptable.
Looks like a Stevie Wonder job , I’d have tried to find an Elite company.

That is a shoddy job to say the least. It looks like PU/flexi-teak and not real teak to me. Is this the case ?

At least he wont be wanting it back back I would suggest before he sets about rectifying it, you first establish the points you have made in writing and with pictures to document what you are not happy with and the level of what is acceptable to you. Then you and he/they, go through it in detail and if he agrees that he can resolve the issues to these acceptable standards, he signs to that affect and completes the task. If he doesn't agree to it then do not let him perform any further work on your boat as the likely outcome will be worse still and ask for your deposit back instead as you will have to find a supplier to remove his work and start again. Or he can remove his work but has to leave the boat in the standard that it was in when first he came onboard.

Such a shame to see that someone is operating in this manner on peoples boats. It should be obvious that you are not going to last if your abilities are not up to scratch.

Good luck

Well he’s returned to rectify the faults last week. He’s still not finished but after looking at the progress this weekend I noticed damage to the gel coat around the new decking. Plus a fine black sanding dust and off cuts left around the stern. So no concern for the environment.

I’ve emailed him photos to which he said the damage was caused myself whilst removing the old decking.
Fortunately I had taken photos of his poor workmanship prior to his latest return which captured the same areas and there was no visible damage. So this has occurred during his last visit.
After sending him the before and after pictures, he’s still saying someone else has caused the damage in between his visits and that they don’t do any sanding.(fine dust around the stern). And you can clearly see sanding marks on new decking, possibly used to remove the mastic overspill. Really!
His last email mentioned he will do what he can to give the finish I want but said I will probably never be happy.

The original and the "repaired" works are both terrible.
Is this a company or a sole trader?
You're heading for having a proper firm remove his work and re-do the job, and demanding/suing him for the increased cost arising from the new work and return of the 50% you already paid.
Don't under any circs pay him the balance.
Objectively this is terrible work and you're due rectification cost under CRA2015. Does he have enough net worth and a fixed enough address to chase after?

Wow.....he's right I don't think you (or anyone else he's ever worked for) will ever be happy - that is shocking.

I'd be getting a quote (from someone else) to sort it and sending that to him.

Is the section in the photo the only part that is now causing concern. if so you maybe its best not to have him return.
No thats just a small section of poor workmanship.

He's returned to replace the two side steps and now shoved black mastic everywhere. All the areas where the decking was short is now black.
Sanding marks left on areas where he's removed the bad mastic and now the grain effect has been lost.
I went down this weekend and noticed he has managed to get iron filings on my gel coat during last week. Probably by constantly sharpening a knife or something. But he will deny this.

I've asked the owner of the company to come over to look at the decking.

It sounds as though this guy is fairly incompetent. !

Be interesting to hear what the owner of the company has to say but I don’t think I would want them back and I wouldn’t be parting with any more cash.

No cash will be paid until I'm happy. Although theres still the dispute on who's responsible for damaging my grp and now the iron filing stains.
They have a stand at the show but I don't think he will have a chance to visit until after the show.
