Sailing goosewinged in fresh breeze just me and the wife aboard when we heard a very distressed female voice call on 16 Mayday Mayday Mayday this is Yacht XYZ XYZ (Dont want to embarrass them or break the confidentiality of radio messages).

Usually in our area the coastguard will respond instantly.By the time we had rolled up the genoa to steady the boat still no reply .So I called for station calling Mayday Call again with your position.

After a few attempts nothing so I reported it to Coast Guard and we carried on , all the fun of the day had evaporated as the call was loud ,clear and obviously genuine.I scanned around with the binoculars but could only see two other boats both looked normal.

Short while later to our great relief "XYZ" reported on 16 to CG. they had had a man overboard incident now recovered and no assistance required.

mood lifted again we cracked out the Genoa and continued surfing our way up the Channel .

Congratulations must be in order to the person who we now know singlehandedly got back and rescued the person very quickly in a lumpy sea.but if they had given even an approximate indication of position then a local lifeboat was literally 15 minutes away.Had the rescue not been so resoundingly successfull this may have been vital.

i hope not to have caused any embarrasement by posting this just that the rest of us can perhaps remember to at least discuss this scenario with our crew more often.

Also makes DSC connected to GPS seem more and more attractive.(Even to a tightwad sailor like me /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifbefore anyone else says it..... )

Good to here that the MOB was retrieved safely.

I reckon the wash from a goosewinging Vega may have been responsible for the MOB in the first place!

Most people dont get that close to our transom, even if they are hoping for some high speed photos. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Having been the singlehanded helm involved in the rescue of a chap in the water (from a capsized small boat) (on the way to the Mercury meet last year) I learnt that the need for keeping an eye on the chap in the water, overruled the ability to operate the radio, especially if the microphone cable is too short to be able to operate from the helm. I was only able to set out a mayday relay after I had stabilised my boats position adjacent to the man in the water - in this occasion it involved me stern on to waves and weather, with my engine going full astern (27hp diesel) (it was a tad windy). I then had the man onboard before the inshore rescue boat arrived.

What I did learn and have subsequently fitted, was the need for a secondary speaker at the helm position, and an extension to the microphone cable to be able to operate from the helm.

With only me plus SWMBO as the only crew, I have had to give some thought to this sort of situation.

It is as result of that thought that I have fitted a new Raymarine 54e (waterproof) DSC radio next to the helms position.

Hopefully it will never be used apart from the daily CG radio check.

fully agree about the potential benefit of a DSC set near the helm position.

do you really need to do a daily coast guard radio check though? If you are using the radio now and then to call up marinas or other boats that should be enough.Imagine a busy day with every boat calling their local CG the system couldnt cope and any emergency calls would be blocked out.

If I were you I would edit that out before you get bombarded!

You will like our new Standard radio then, it has a remote mic in the cockpit with all the same functions of the main set at the chart table. ie vol, squelch, channel, DW, etc. It has its own DSC button, so I wouldn't need to go below in a big emergency. Best 80 quid I have spent on the boat - the mutts nuts, in fact. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I always hear the Sunsail boats doing a radio check, I thought that was the thing to do! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think I will be too busy drooling over the new sails to notice it /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

While radio is the preferred option for Maydays don't forget that in that situation you are fully entitled to use a distress flare if reaching for the radio is difficult under the circumstances.
You could also set fire to a burning tar barrel on the foredeck, fly flags N over C etc etc before anybody else suggests those /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If I get a DSC set do you think I could stop carrying the drum of tar everywhere? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You look at the instrument panel - see the radio and say "check" ... all done! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
