Can anyone suggest a temporary but tenable 2m draft anchorage that could be found at night for N though to SSE winds that one could use for maybe 12 hours max until the marinas, clubs and offices open for business,

There isn't any really sheltered - at least not in stronger winds. Pottery Pier end of Brownsea is probably the best. All the marinas are well lit and you should be able to get into Poole Yacht Club and tie up to the waiting pontoon on the west side until Ian the berthing master gets in at 8. Give him a call

Depending on the wind direction just anchor on the edge of the channel to sw or nw (Pottery Pier) of Brownsea Island. Swanage or Studlands will be ok in a northerly but will get uncomfortable with any E or S.

I've seen boats anchored near the 'main entrance landing stage' to Brownsea, there's deep water there.
They do sometimes (as have we!), but no real protection in a N through to SSE wind. There are several buoys laid there too so watch out for ground tackle.

If it's just overnight, at this time of year I'm sure you'd find loads of free mooring buoys to the north of Brownsea Island which all have at least 2m draft. Technically not free to use as they are generally owned/laid by Salterns Marina, Parkstone YC or Poole Quay Boat Haven, and neither will they have any significant shelter in N-SSE winds, but a secure option. Salterns Marina generally have staff on all night long if you wanted an (expensive, small) berth there, or to properly use one of their buoys.

Pottery Pier would be the best bet, just stay close to the channel!

My boat lives on one of the moorings along the north side of Brownsea Island, in the Wych channel, and your best option is to follow the channel on past the moorings and anchor off the western end of the island. Even in a northerly the fetch across the harbour very rarely kicks up more than a very light chop.

Thank you for these ideas, very useful. Wych Channel sounds promising. The night arrival is because over the past years I have twice arrived from France or Channel Islands on a day time crossing to find less sheltered winds than was forecast. The 2nd occasion it was near the end of the day and after trying many phone calls I could only find one berth in the harbour, Parkstone YC. If not there I would have been anchoring somewhere.
