I borrowed this from my BIL on holiday a couple of years ago, and found it a really good read - and I rarely read fiction. The detail of Roman engineering (in the broadest possible sense) and society was fascinating, but I'm not sure how much of it is based on detailed research, and how much is the product of a fervent imagination.

Very credible, though.
