Hello

In South America polyurethane paint of the best brands like Bayer for example for automobiles is everywhere available and not to expensive.
On the other hand specific marine poly paints of not so prestigeous brands are not easy to find and are more expensive.
It would be interesting to know if they are different, if the marine paints include additives to improve life, resistance and gloss in the marine environment.
I am not a chemist but I am tempted to believe that there should not be different, that polyurethane paint for cars and boats is the same paint.
Anyone knows the answer?
Can we use automobile poly for a boat?

Saludos

I am not a chemist. What I will say though is that the formulations of paints in South America are different from the same band in the USA .... almost certainly due to the EPA.

I used Mexican produced IMRON with their brushing reducers to roll on a paint finish. It was very difficult to keep a wet edge and the paint blistered within a couple of years. I suspect that the amount of reducer I was using in order to keep a wet edge made the paint porous ..... or rather more porous that it should have been. IMRON is intended for cars.

I have used Awlgrip under similar conditions and got a finish that was mirror smooth with and excellent shine .... and it was much easier to use. After 5 years the finish was still good. It was the hard version not Awlgrip 2000.

There is a world of difference between one-pot poly and two-pot so there is a very wide spectrum to choose from. FWIW I painted my kit car with International 2-pot in 1994 and I just polish it from time to time. It is still perfect.

My boat was painted using aquamarine colour Dolmus (minibus) paint in Turkey. It lasted beautifully for the seven years before I sold her. no sign of deterioration.
