An unusual question I know, but does anyone know if sulfuric acid has any adverse effect on polyesterene, ie will it melt or desolve it?
The reason I ask is, the battery box where my start batt is housed is bigger internally than the battery, and I had an idea of cutting a block of the above to fit neatly in said box and cutting out the inner section so the batt would fit neatly into it, then use a retainer strap to secure the batt from been able to lift up.
TIA, C_W

Polystyrene and most related plastics aren't affected by battery (sulphuric) acid. I think you might have to be careful, however, that the acid, if spilled, doesn't soak in. Wrap the polystyrene in an ordinary plastic bag.

Polystyrene comes in various grades. The cheap white variety has the granules vaguely stuck together and its not particularly liquid proof. You can get better grades in builders merchants that are much more waterproof. Typically they are referred to as "red" or "blue". Physically they are stronger and dont crumble.

Polystyrene comes at market as transparent( without Polybutadien(rubber) in it) or High Impact types mixed with rubber to 9%.
In accordance with my experience till 20% H2SO4 is OK. For higher concentrations PS is not resistant to H2SO4.
