The Council is quite ..

correct. If it is your sole or main residence then you must pay.

I say bring back the Poll Tax, but with simpler collection procedures. The whole shebang was thrown out because it was so hard to collect and so costly for councils to track the debtors. If it was linked to national insurance numbers and collected centrally it could be made to work and then ALL would have to pay, either by deduction from benefits or by deduction by employers.

HOW TO AVOID PAYING

Being the business of buying and renovating propety, and not wanting to pay 50% tax on an empty property, I have suceeded in non payment thus, Take out your WC and your house is rendered un-inhabitable by the local authority's own standards. Inform them of this and they will send someone witha a notepad to check and then hey presto, the bills stop coming for the period which you are without the head.

That probably works for a ..

developer but probably (shouldn't) won't for the normal person. But certainly worth a try.

PS Ask your valuation panel about it!

One last point. Sold up and used sons address for mail etc.. When we came back to UK, albeit temporarily and set up home ,we had to give previous address and gave sons. Within two weeks he had received a demand for the return of his 25% rebate for single occupancy.

Just won't let go will St. Edmundsbury Borough Council.
