The photos below are courtesy of the Fairey Owners Club archive.

They show some grp dinghies built by Alan Burnard in about 1957 in the Bosham or Emsworth area before he joined Fairey Marine.

It's possible that only the 5 you can see were built.

Note the wooden keels. Perhaps that's the only thing which might help identify one.

I would like to find one of these to purchase.

There’s an old dinghy outside Emsworth with flowers in but sadly due to present conditions I cannot go and inspect but there might be others in say Emsworth or Prinstead or Bosham Hoe whose memories stretch back to the 50s but rather before my time. Are those sheds ex army maybe? Have you thought of contacting one of the local history societies in area for info on location?

Good idea. I'll do a bit of googling and I'll ask Gordon Currey.

They look a bit like Fairey Ducklings to me.

Is that the connection?

Duckling was later, Uffa Fox design, built by Fairey in hot moulded wood. 3 layers of 2.5mm Agba veneer. Different shape, more rounded bow. I have one. Frustratingly I had another with a shaft in, gave it away not realising at the time that it was a Fairey Gosling. A version of the Duckling with a JAP Model 2A engine.

The boats I pictured are grp in 1957.

My interest is that I have had 7 Fairey boats, mostly Alan Burnard work. I'd like to have one of these as a talking point at Fairey nerd gatherings!

Did you ever meet him when he was at Hamble Point Ben?

Hi John

Yes, many times. When I bought the first Huntress in 2001 he was quite regular at Fairey events. Did a few jobs for me on stern glands and such like.

In 2005 or 06 we went to the Festival of Speed to see him in the pits with the Delage, he fired it up for me.

I guess you must have known him too.

We have a Fairey overdrive unit on one of our Series Landys

That might make a talking point at the next Fairey nerd gathering?

Richard
As do I. Had a pair of new old stock freewheeling hubs too, but when someone offered me £600 for them I suddenly lost interest in marginal and theoretical improvements to economy and wear.

I have a snippet more info.

The location of the sheds is not Emsworth or Bosham. It's Fleetlands at Gosport/Fareham. The location of the pic with the chap fishing shows I think Portchester Castle and the chalk cutting in the hill at Paulsgrove.

Not sure, but the dinghy in the first picture looks longer than the ones shown in the last 2 images? Also there seems to be 2 positions for rowlocks in the first image, where as the boats in the last photos only show 1 position? Perhaps they made them in 8 and 10ft lengths?

Yes, there's two thwarts in the first image (where the front two people are sat). Obviously a longer dinghy.

Every year the Chichester Harbour Conservancy sells off junked dinghies etc. I don't know if they have done it already this year but there always quite a few...you never know.

If anyone would like a Fairey Duckling pls PM. It needs a bit of work which, even now, I don't have the time for.
