Please folks, talk me out of this madness - 26m Canados!

While looking around at what the market has to offer, with half an idea to move ahead from the old tub, I had the bad idea of doing a bit of reverse engineering, sort of.
So, while I normally searched based on a number of parameters (flybridge, 16 to 18 meters, last decade construction, with a selection of my preferred builders, and of course budget), I thought to leave everything open but the budget, and see what sort of boats could be bought.
And among other exotic stuff (like Magnums for instance!), I came across a mind blowing Canados.
26m, no less.
With internal and external spaces that are not just in a different league compared to what I'm used to - more likely two leagues above (see pics below, just to give an idea).
And the build quality is way above what any newly built boat can offer - leaving aside the stratosphere of custom superyachts.
Last but not least, her 16V Detroit engines has been rebuilt to zero hours, together with a total refitting of the electrical plant and instrumentation.
Otoh, yeah, of course there's a catch: she's one of the latest completely wooden built Canados.

Bottom line, please remind me why I should forget that thing PDQ.
Not that I don't know all the good reasons, but it's always nice to be told by everybody else... :)

You love working on and tinkering with your 'old tub' which you can do on your own and at your leisure.

Take that Canados on and you will need assistance with all sorts of maintenance and repairs which will drive you to distraction.

Think with your head (and wallet) not your heart.

Wow looks great mapism. Go for it! We will help with maintenance (from our armchairs/keyboards, naturally!). The saloon picture looks the right way round in terms of dining and galley starboard like BA, but the writing on the (terrible!) scatter cushions is flipped. Is the picture flipped?
Can you retrofit stabs to a wooden hull? Everything is possible of course, but I mean is it a sensible project? What is the form of the wood construction on these hulls, and what sections/ thicknesses/frame spacing etc?
Great project!

go for it, you know you really want her, so just focus on all the positive comments from the forum
Doug has a point, but let's not stand on minute annoying details! IIRC maintenance is done by the yard on the current tub, same on this, no difference, just a bit more to spend. Do your maths, get Deleted User to help on manmaths and you're done.
I may even come over for a few days to give you a hand as soon I'll be feeling odd not having any serious job to look forward to :D

Hull is triple planked thing, or ply?

cheers

V.

PS. where's Alf when you need him????

Normally I'm always in favour of encouraging people to blow their money on a floating money pit but I thought you can't drive anything over 24m without a professional qualification or does this boat come in under the 24m load line length limit? The other reason you can't have it is that its going to make my boat look awfully small parked next to it:eek:

Seriously though for what you use your boat for ie as much a summer home as a boat I think a bigger boat like this makes a lot of sense. Not in financial terms of course but what boat does

Any harbourmaster will be happy to receive you(r money), dancing of joy the moment he spots you on the way in.

He will then order a new car and plan for early retirement. While you tiker on, on your WOODEN 26m boat.

Sleep on it. Wooden....

Wake up! Yep, it's still wooden.

Mapism, iirc you wrote somewhere that your current boat is the last wooden boat you will have in this live. :)
Well, for this reason it would be my recommandation not to buy this Canados,
while i'm still a fan of the brand, (and it's finish) the only one thing I do regret about Blue Angel is the wooden super structure.

every year we have to repair some leaks going through the deck in to the cabins,
just a week ago, we (my friends) referbished the cupboard on the flybridge, with the hydraulic pump from the crane, as water was leaking in to the saloon....

last night and this morning we had pooring rain here (with just me and swmbo onboard)
we did find again a few small water leaks, ...

plan is to go to a yard in winter 2017 - 2018 somewhere in Italy, (tbc)
for removing the teak floor, waterproofing the deck, and putting new teak.
and repainting (and repairing a few bad spots ) the complete superstructure

just gives a idea to what you might be up with that Canados for sale,
I'm not sure if you fancy a more busy live in that respect :D :D

and finally, despite my problems with the engines, I'd rather choose 4 stroke Man or Cat
instead of the older DD's (but thats my personal opinion)
FYI 4 weeks ago, and again yesterday we did some sea trials with the engines, and both seem the run smooth.
remember both have been rebuild completely, the one we did last year got some extra adjustments this year.

If you like the Canados style, look around for something younger than 1995, from than they are totally GRP iirc.

P

You above most people, will know what it means to own a wooden boat. A wooden boat. A wooden boat.

However, you are only young once and you cant take any of your considerable wealth with you when you die................

More pics and details are needed!
