Our old Rotostay furler has come to point of expiry and the rigger suggests either a Plastimo 609S system or a Selden Furlex. The price difference is significant, but the riggers suggests that the life span of the latter is 20 years while the Plastimo he suggests has 5 years.

The boat is a 50 year old Centaur and we are both the wrong side of 75 with attendant mobility ailments, so it seems like a no brainer, but my question is what are folk's experience of the Plastimo? Is it reliable and easy to use?

Thanks in advance or any suggestions

My Plastimo 406, the smaller version, is over 25 years old and still working.

I am just installing an 811S, bigger version of the 609. Of course not the same quality as a Selden at well over twice the price, but I looked around at boats in the club marina and many older boats, often 30 years old still have their original Plastimo furlers in use. They are very simple an require little (DIY) maintenance. other more expansive makes are often difficult to take apart and service when the time comes in 10 or 15 years. so, go ahead - it will outlast your period of ownership.

I seriously take issue with the riggers claim of 5 years !!

My other boat Conqubin 38 - has the Furlex 2000 and I will be honest to say I have more trouble with that than my Plastimo.

For a Centaur - not because I have a Plastimo ... but purely because its a sensible unit for such boat - the 609S would be my choice.

Its easily fitted ... and thousands of boats use it ...

I had to replace the Plastimo furler on my previous boat. I've no idea how old it was, but we'd had the boat for 15 years.

The non-Plastimo furler was knackered, but reparable on our current boat when we bought her, but according to the rigger, we'd have spent more on fixing it than fitting a new Plastimo, so we have a new Plastimo.

If I were kitting out a boat to take me round the world, I might go for Selden or Rotostay, but for ordinary sailing, Plastimo it is.
