Plastic thru hull. Blanking plug stuck.

Apparently also happens when Trident 24 rudder tube bearings are replaced with nylon ones. Jams the rudder solid, inspiring Atlantic crossings.

To save me asking you to ask me how I know I'll tell you that I read it on the Trident OA website, except the Atlantic crossing bit, which I speculated up all by myself.

How else could that happen?
Some grades of nylon, 6 and 66 for example, swell up to 11% on immersion in water.

If its one of those stupid paddle wheel logs that last for about a week until a barnacle comes along I took the guts out of the thing, filled it full of silicone blanked it off. That was 15 years ago. I give it a visual every so often but basically forget its there. In fact, as we speak my boat is up the beach and it is, dry between tides as I am working on it so I may give this fitting a full inspection very soon.

Maybe stupid - but they work. If you find it stops .... then have blanking cap ready and pull the log .. blank off the water coming in ... clean log ... put back. Mop up the litre or so water and go happily on your way ...

All the newer Airmar types as used by virtually everyone these days have a bung with screw cap that inserts just like the log. It is also indexed so twisting will not help.

I love that bit : "used by virtually everyone these days" ...... maybe for those who have fitted new Airmar .... but I would suggest that there may be MORE older setups out there than new ...
Nasa I believe still only supply a screw cap .... as eaxmple.

Navico, Raymarine, Garmin. Well done for quoting NASA I'm sure they have a huge market share. For the last 20 years everyone else has been using Airmar and they come with the plugs as described.

I also know of others who only supply a screw cap .. but I shall let you have your day ... and just comment that despite your 'puuting down' of NASA - they are still very much around and in use on many boats ...
