Plastic Prop Shaft Thingy?

Anyone seen one of these before or can tell me what it is?

The Surveyor commented on it saying "Although in good condition at this time, the external bearing appears to lack a proper water supply to it."

I've never seen one of these "Plastic Thingys" on a prop shaft before?!

I would recommend you stay away from sand with that type of fitting.

There's no play in the system and it got me from Plymouth to Bridlington last year, apart from that I don't know anything about it?!

I'm inclined to think that what you see there is a protective cap. Does it pull out to reveal the cutless bearing?

Your boat's a Contessa, isn't it? Contessas used a Tufnol bearing instead of a conventional rubber cutless bearing, as did most Vegas. You can buy replacement Tufnol bearings from Jeremy Rogers Ltd.

I have not tried to remove it.

It is a Contessa 26, I'll send an e-mail to Jeremy and see what he makes of it.

That's not Tufnol. Looks to me like nylon or acetal. Of the three acetal is the most likely as both nylon and Tufnol swell in the presence of water.

Hmmm....

....doesn't look like the Tufnol and whilst the bronze fitting looks the same on the Vega picture supplied by Ash..... the plastic thingy isn't present?!

I don't have a picture of the fitting. This is a picture with the fitting missing. The origional bearing was Tufnol - fairly thin wall - maybe 3mm IIRC. The replacement was a 'plastic' material and supplied by SteveBirch of this parish.

On the Vega the 'tube' part of the fitting points aft. To me it looks as your tube points forward, entering the stern tube. The bit of the bearing that you can see in your photo is the flange seen in the Jeremy Rogers photo.
