Day Return

The ferry company claim that if you dont use the return half of a day return then they will dock you the difference for a single. Presumably only if you've paid by credit card. Anybody any experience of them actually doing that?

Re: Day Return

i have heard of them eventually finding out that you had used a series of cheap day returns to go for 2-week hols x-channel, and they warned him.

Taking the single and not the return must be a subjective judgement - cos you could actually be very poorly and in hospital, and due to return in a year or two.

Re: Planning next summer\'s cruise

Gosh, I'm envious of all these destinations. We'll still have our 'L' plates on next year, so an extended cruise for us will probably be Southampton to Yarmouth (that's the one on the I.O.W!!)

why?

New car drivers are exhorted to go for long drives, new skiers are told to put miles under the skis, but new boaties seem to go very short distances which (if they have an iffy day) seems to actually make them even more nervous about going a good distance.

I wd make sure that you get someone opn board who will takem you down to Falmouth asap in nice new boat after seatrials , and come back visiting as many ports as poss on the way.

You will then feel much more confident, rather than at the limit of your knowldge all the time.

Also, you can bore the pants off us/everyone.

Re: why?

It is definitely a confidence thing that tends to permeate large sections of the community

i remember years ago meeting this guy on flot. It was his 7th my first. i asked him why he did not bareboat and he said he didn't have enough experience of doing it on his own and was worried about nav.
In fact he made me nervous. but both his wife and him were competent. in fact they did not once contribute a single stuff up to the evening raft up, he didn't even shout at her.

It was going with more adventurous mates that encouraged me and built up my confidence. but there do seem to be alot of people who think themselves not capable when clearly what they lack is gumption and not ability.

just a thought

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'you're making a scene'.

Re: why?

Actually, funny you should say that.......we are having a professional skipper with us for the first few days, and I was going to give 'er indoors the helm for most of the time to get her used to it. However, I just said over dinner, it would probably be better if we put that time to better use and did a much longer journey with the pro to look after us (Cherbourg/Dartmouth?) - local stuff after that would be a doddle. She seemed to agree (or at least, I took the grunt as a positive!)

But you are right, we should perhaps spread our wings sooner rather than later - after all we went far and wide with the motor cruiser.

Re: frightening the crew

i think it would be reasonable to go out and lean the boat over a bit, see a bit of weather, obviously within reasonable limits: but her seeing someone else going "hoorah, decent wind " instead of less exp crew huddling together saying ooer wd build confidence too, i think.

Of course, think it makes a decent differrence if you are already boaty, and have established the basics with her such as the rarity of man/boat-eating sharks in the Channel and so forth.

Go West, Young Man and you will find warm welcomes here. Get in touch with me nearer the time and I will advise you how to avoid the expensive places.

Don\'t avoid the expensive places

In my experience the most expensive places, most expensive tools and most expensive everything is always jolly decent indeed. Whereas the cheapie things/places etc are often close to being rubbish, and enjoyment of them involves the word "considering".

Re: why?

Plus - the sailing becomes a squillion times easier once you leave the Solent as you've not got to take evasive action every 30 seconds...

Is sailingf meant to be relaxing then?

I thought it was meant to be a nautical equivalent of the dodgems on a bumpy surface!
