Planar Heater, anyone know how to make it work?

That certainly looks a lot more business like than the one supplied with my friends Planar a couple of years ago which had tiny, unmarked buttons. Incidentally, he finds the best way to run it is simply to turn on and off manually and not use the thermostat.

After the debate I think the issue here has been my reluctance to maintain the power supply to the heater (or anything else on our boat) 24/7. I turn off the batteries when I am not aboard which is most of the time, and it now appears these controls take quite a while to come to life and play dead while doing it.
I am unlikely to change this habit so in consequence have to accept the delay but now I know what to expect.
I do not regret asking the original question because in doing so I think many of us now understand how start up differs from a vehicle which has power to the heater all the time.

Hi there, I too have a planar 2d supplied by Owen with the same controller as the OP. It does clearly state in the installation instructions that the electrical supply should be fed direct and uninterrupted. I've had mine for about 7months now and followed the installation instructions to the letter, everything has worked well from day one and have not had a single issue with either the heater or controller. Just sayin.

I've got a Planar 2D but with the small PU-22 controller. It is very tolerant of the house bank being turned off (obviously not before the shut-down sequence is completed). It simply shows an error message when the house bank is first turned back on - showing the supply was disconnected - then a couple of presses sets it happily going again. I've not had any problems with it - indeed it is a superb piece of kit, quiet, efficient and not too heavy on the AHs.

Many years ago I was the agent for CZ in Wrexham. In those days you had to mix the 2T in the tank. There was a chap came in with his son. Wanted one. He was a know it all. He bought it, I explained very carefully the mixing instructions for the 2T. Yeah yeah yeah! few weeks later he brought it back, seized solid. I stripped it, the piston had seized, the big end was in a terrible state, more worn than from a simple seizure. I finally got the truth out of the young boy, daddio had said to ignore the instructions and use the petrol cap as a measure for the whole of the tank. They hadnt been putting enough oil in! A very good example of the punter knowing best and ignoring instructions! They were lucky, CZ gave me the spares to repair under warranty!

An old(ish) thread but......I've just installed a Planar 2kw supplied by Owen in a GK29. I too had problems with the CP-27 controller which seemed to have a mind of it's own. I contacted Owen who replaced it. Still the same problem......until. I discovered that the controller needs only the lightest of touch. Press too hard or too long and it becomes confused and sulks. Repeated "stabbing" only makes the problem worse. A light almost imperceptible touch of the keys and it works fine.

mine is still functioning as it should...despite the fact I installed it !

As is mine! The installation was a bit daunting at first but proved to be pretty straightforward. I was quite chuffed. The initial problems with the CP-27 were down to user error - doh. It's so simple to operate, even HID can turn it off and on, and believe me, as far as the yacht is concerned, if it can be buggered up she can do it.
Owen has a question and answer facebook page which I discovered was the best way of contacting him.

Just about to do another installation on a mate's yacht - apparently I'm an expert now :)

+1 I replaced an increasingly expensive Webasto with a 4.4kW Planar - albeit with the very simplest 0n/off / blow controller. It was pretty straightforward to install and I'm pleased with the results. If it operates well across Siberia in trucks - I reckon it's OK for Scotland. I was reluctant to install anything other than the simplest controller.

A great heater which I fully recommend. However a dreadful controller, which lets down the package. A good controller would be one that a first time guest on the boat could switch on and off without any instructions. It took me a few weeks to understand my controller, and I still need to look at the instructions after I have been away for a while. With a decent controller, this would be an unbeatable heater.

WOW, this thread is like the best thriller. With a happy ending. Good to hear that Quandary did succeeded getting his Planar Heater to work.

I just installed an 2kw heater with PU-27 controller in my sailboat, absolutely without problems. But I must admit that the first thing I did, even before I tried to start the heater, was to make the display not go to sleep mode after about 5, which is the factory default setting.

A lot of problems could have been avoided if the default setting was so the display did not go to sleep mode. Especially when you install and start the heater for the first time.

I understand that Planar is developing a new and quieter pump. I will look forward to that. Despite the fact that I have built the Thomas's Magnets fuel pump into a box of mineral wool and installed it in my enclosed and soundproofed engine room, you still hear that click, click, click. For now i can live with it because the clicking tells me that i get a warm boat :) But for the future it would be nice with a more quiet pump.

I bought the heater at https://planarheaters.co.uk/ and have received very nice and helpful support from Owen and Poul :)
