Hello all

Myself, Her indoors and our little dog are staying on the Isle of Wight for a week starting on the 9th July and we are taking our 4.5 m Rib (60hp) with us on a trailer and will be leaving the rib moored at East Cowes Marina on the Medina.

Can all you Solent boaters and any one else for that matter suggest places to visit in the Rib.

Many thanks

Newtown Creek, moor at Shalfleet and walk to The New Inn.

Yarmouth.

Colwell Bay.

Totland Bay, new cafe on the pier.

Alum Bay.

Scratchells Bay

Keyhaven

Lymington

Beaulieu

Wootten Creek.

Ashlet Creek.

Hamble

Titchfield Haven.

Gun Wharf

Bembridge.

Plus:

Newport at the very top of the Medina.

Curbridge at the very top of the Hamble. Go under the road, railway and motorway bridges and keep going for ages. It’s lovely up there. When you come to the fork turn right. If you are on high water you can continue a short distance to the pub. It used to be the Horse And Jockey Then it closed. I think it has reopened now.

Also upstream for your berth, and halfway to Newport:

Island Harbour - great for a lunch stop. Probably no need to lock in. You could walk from the waiting pontoon.

The Folly. Moor on its pontoon on the left or on the visitors pontoons opposite and take the water taxi. Good for lunch and dinner with inside and outside dining.

You also have The Lifeboat pub restaurant onsite where you will be berthed.

How about the south of the Isle of Wight, lovely part of the coastline in good weather. Go over to Ventnor, there is a small harbour with a slipway and launch there (tide dependant) and explore the coastline, one place is Steephill Cove and various other bays, should be straight forward with your rib.

One thing I would advise is that you want to eat out in evening it’s worth booking . If staying at East Cowes you might be lucky to find the chain ferry working which opens up delights of Cowes. Coast restaurant is good for both lunch and dinner and we’ll behaved dogs welcome . We had a great lunch there on Monday and service was excellent. If Seaview attracts the Old Fort has now improved its game and is probably better than Seaview back bar and restaurant. Sadly the Battery at Puckpool has gone downhill somewhat . Obviously no trip to island complete without a visit to crab and lobster at Bembridge or the crab houseboat in Bembridge harbour for lunch. I guess you could in a rib try Ryde harbour tides willing and walk to the Italian at bottom of Union street . Lastly if in Yarmouth then Hot rocks or new inn at shalfleet . Not certain I would venture to Ventnor even though there is a harbour of sorts . Depending on weather if you make it to Yarmouth then a trip across to key haven might be of interest on return. Do look out for DFL on the island along with the grackles, ovenors and corkheads. Hope you have good weather as we are heading to Lymington next efore moving on to Portland and somewhere in the West Country. There is by the way a good pilot book of the Solent and books on Solent hazards which might be interesting reading. If you need any outboard support Bembridge outboards seemed friendly folk when I was there other day.

If you're in East Cowes take a short walk into town and treat yourself to dinner in Prego, had a lovely bit of pasta in there last week and they are really friendly. The blue cheese and caramelised onion dough balls are rather good too. Make sure to book as it's popular. You can have a walk along the sea front afterwards as well.
