Lifted boat out today for first time as new 12 months ago. IPS 500 pods. Props a mess? Any advice please.

Mine did that 12 years ago in one season....Hardly changed since!!!! Polish them up to see how bad and deep. When polished see how well they ring when tapped.
 
Definately a galvanic electrical problem.
Check the bonding to your anodes.
I had a similar problem a few years ago and it turned out to be shaft brushes.
I dont think this has anything to do with poor quality material.
IMO this is electrical erosion.
You HAVE to get to the bottom of this - new props will do exactly the same.
 
The front prop on my DPH drive looked like that after 1 year and Volvo replaced it under warrenty saying it was duff batch of props , the rear prop just went black and looks ok . I agree with Hurricane that it could be galvanic action though because the chap i spoke to at MG Duff said there is a possibility of galvanic action because the prop is mounted on a nylon bush that effectively isolates it from the annodes !!!? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
This is known as "De-zincification" it can be the result of either a non homogeneous alloy composition ie. the cake hasn't been mixed thoroughly prior to baking, or galvanic corrosion.
In this case my guess is that it is the former, as with galvanic corrosion the effect is a more general corrosion, with more pronounced corrosion around the edges of the props.
We had the same issue with ours, a Prestige 36, after only 6 months. Jeanneau replaced them free of charge.
 
My guess would also be galvanic corrosion.

Do you keep shore power on when you leave the boat?
Do you have a galvanic isolator installed?
Did you check your anodes, and in what condition were they?
 
Hi Neil, I would have a word with Prosser marine were you got the boat from, as I would have thought that they would be covered by warranty. Maybe Colin will be able to advise you, but he tells me that the aftersales on Cruiser Yachts is 1st class, so I imagine they will replace them for free and claim the parts back from Volvo.I will set Ian on Stan for you if he makes any excuses.LOL
 
Yes I have got galavanic isolator although have never been able to understand what it does, not a lot by the look of those of props. I do leave power plugged in all the time whilst in marina to keep the freezer going! Anodes disintegrated when powerwashed but were still there, just.
 
Hi Dave, have got Colin on the case. Copied photos to Stan. Bit surprised by initial response from local Volvo agent who thought props look normal and that IPS legs seem to draw a lot of current? But they are getting advice from Volvo. Agents have already tried to suggest that as legs not serviced warranty has run out, by only a few weeks and thats after paying them a large number of squids a fortnight ago to service both engines. Typical boating story - obvious fault equals run for cover. Perhaps one of the joys of boating that many of us spend mega money on something that causes so many grief. I am now waiting to find out what Volvo are saying. Stan is sending the photos to the states for an opinion and has been helpful so far. So waiting to see what happens. Will keep the Forum updated of progress or otherwise.

That's not good! Below 25% mass remaining, things other than the anode start dissolving.
 
Regarding the galvanic isolator a quite good source for simple explanation is this .

Regarding the anodes, as others have mentioned, it is recommended to change them when 50% of their mass dissolves.. So your props propably did the rest of the job /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So it might be a good idea to have your galvanic isolator checked (a not functional one could make no visual difference to a fully functional one) and if it is ok, your 12V circuit is causing electrolysis (possibly combined with the different metals' galvanic corrosion)...
 
Drama over. Volvo agent in Glasgow very helpful as Volvo have agreed to replace props. Having the anodes bonding checked and will have galvanic isolator checked. Also will be checking anodes more regularly. Thanks to eveyone on the Forum for their advice and comments.
