This beach looks lovely but even around 17North it was not warm in february...

A quieter moment.

I remember this beach well. The Cape Verde military were carrying out a landi g exercise there which looked pretty impressive, until we got close enough to see that their AK47s were made of wood.

Main reason for taking that picture was for Mrs. S, not with me on this trip. Before the marina, we went there a couple of times and used to land on that beach in the dinghy. Pre marina there were a lot of 'boat boys'. We got into the system and used them for boat security, getting stuff like laundry done and finding out where football was televised! That really did it and often as we approched the beach and I got into the sea, a few of the lads would nip down and carry the tender plus Mrs S. ashore so she didnt get her feet wet!

Locals are mad keen on footy, Portuguese teams and after a match between Man Utd and Benfica, I still got a shirt I swapped afterwards. They made us feel very welcome. Still a friendly place, would go back for a fourth visit for sure.

Gibraltar in disguise.

Sailed in just before Christmas 1983 and spent a lovely week there. I keep promising the missus that I'll take her there one day.

I sailed in on a Danish flagged yacht in January 1980. They played marshal music through a public address system across the town and had very very few visitors. The only bar I remember was on the sea front down a tight alley way but a few great nights had with the locals. A crew member had his first wet shave with a cut throat at a barbers on the corner of the street where the locals had the only tap in town for potable water, which they collected in 25 litre Mobile grease tubs, washed up on the beach we supposed, amongst other things. The Admiralty Pilot for the islands advised ships captains not to allow crew to enter the water from the beach because of the danger of shark. How times have changed!

Interesting, nice pics. Clearly Mindelo has moved on a bit since I was last there 10 years ago...
