A Thought?

Unlike Hageso, who 'lives' in the Walton Pond, I appreciate that most of the Pirates come from further afield & often use the Pirates' Weekend at Stone Point as a catalyst for a few days exploring the Backwaters & the Harwich area.

From previous years, I am aware that some are reasonably cautious about anchoring at Stone Point so can confirm that numerous buoys are available in the Walton Channel & Titchmarsh Marina is just around the corner in the Twizzle.

However, for those looking for something different, The Pond at the Walton & Frinton Yacht Club (WFYC) also beckons. Located behind a 'cat-flap' vessels remain afloat in over 2mtrs at all states of the tide. The 'cat flap' opens about 1 hour before high water; once they 'get the level'. The cat flap closes shortly after high water to retain the level in The Pond but for vessels that can take the bottom, which is soft mud (no surprises there), there a line of buoys with land-lines just up river from the club house, on the right where vessels can moor Mediterranean style.

Short-term visitors can moor up on the Walton Club Quay but should be aware that it dries completely and the camber makes the bottom unsuitable for even twin keels.

One attraction of these club moorings is they give easy walking access to the center of Walton, with it's 2 supermarkets for replenishment & all visitors can be assured of a warm welcome during bar opening hours.

From the Spit Buoy at the top of the Walton Channel to the Walton Club Quay & The Pond, Foundry Reach is well buoyed and from personal experience, provided they stay in the buoyed channel, vessels with less than 1mtr draft can access the quay about 3 hours either side of high water. Obviously a dinghy has a much larger window of access.

I appreciate, albeit on a rising tide, the first time up Foundry Reach can be a bit daunting so should people wish, for the Pirates Stone Point Weekend, I am happy provide pilotage.

Just PM me with your ETA.

Additionally, if you require more details again just PM me.

Pirates Meet Up Walton Yacht Basin (Pond) - Update

This weekend The Old Gaffers will be having a meet at the Walton & Frinton Yacht Club.

Understand the Nancy Blackett hopes to be in the Basin (Pond) this weekend.

Have been advised by one of the club officers that the 'cat-flap' will be opened as soon as they get the level. Anticipate that this will be about 1100am.

Conversely, a visit by dinghy is possible at least 3 hours either side of high water (1218 BST).

Lift in scheduled for Wednesday this week. Down to Halfpenny Friday night, curry from the usual. Then it's out to play Saturday morning, new rig and huge chute to test. Expect us at Pirate Island about an hour before HW. Water bombs will be loaded so if you're ashore expect to get fired on.

Just spent the night on board & it's still blowing old boots.

Had a look at the forecast for the weekend & it doesn't look great!

From personal experience Stone Point in the rain isn't much fun & dinghying in these conditions can be hazardous so this begs the question, "Is there a Plan B?"

Time to get yourself a wheelhouse :)

Saturday forecast us lovely, Sunday rather less so.

Forecast seems to be changing by the hour, unless is absolutely hideous for Sat PM we'll be there. Given there aren't so many of us this year, and the forecast low winds I did consider the idea of a couple of boats rafting up to provide shelter without having to break up the party if there is an occasional shower.

Now, need to find firewood!

We'll be there - if Foxs are letting boats in and out - problems with their piles and they're working incredible hard to fix it. We booked this weekend for pirates and it will take a lot to stop us.
