Pioneer 9

I had a Pionier 10 till last year and know of some P9 owners if you want to try and contact them.
The P10 was a great sailing boat, handles like a dinghy.
Think Clare Francis crossed Atlantic in a P10.

Checked NMW on google seems she was the first woman to sail s/h across the Atlantic,I always thought it was Ann .... IN 1953 in a Mashford 4 tonner called "felicity anne",still further perusal of the net says the Pioneer 9 is a fine seaboat.

The Pioneer is a strong and seaworthy boat. As others have said Aziz was sailed singlehanded non stop from Uk to US by Nicollet Milnes Walker - the first woman to achieve this. I also have a fantastic book by a dutchman who sailed round the world in one - all I have to do is learn to read dutch! My father and I have owned our Pioneer for about 32 years now and she still sails well against more modern boats and the quality of build means they still suffer very few problems. Most are of course around 40 years old now but that shouldn't put you off. Drop me a PM if you want to know more.

Ann Davison. Quite a tough nut, she was: her husband drowned in a storm shortly after they set off on the trip but although she was fairly inexperienced she refitted the boat, learned how to sail and did the trip herself. She wrote a book about it, "My Ship is So Small", which is a damn good read and well worth getting hold of.

Van der Stadt design, built by Southern Ocean Shipyard in a proper fashion ( because I worked for them for a bit but on other boats so none of my bodging )

Yes, the 10 was a much more sporty design, with a small stern. I knew one that was raced in the EAORA regularly. The 9 is more of a cruising design, with the bow end looking like a large Invicta. Both are good sailing boats as you'd expect, though the 9 is pretty narrow in the beam by later standards.
