Nothing much has changed there since we used to take the children into the B&O to get out of the rain. Wards used to have a tiny chandlery which somehow always had what you needed, such as the right size of smock for our daughter, seen here in about 1973. She doesn't look it but she's feeling very chuffed.

The edge of the hard was in a fairly parlous state back then, greatly improved after recent work as can be seen in the other photos.

Even those photos are at least 10 years old. The one of the Butt is prior to the great clean up of 2002, sponsored largely by Babergh DC. Unfortunately, it was followed by the construction of the large concrete sitting area complete with eye sore railings which is now at the top of the hard.

I am calm. I just think it is wrong to leave things in a disgusting state for others under the premise that it is somehow "quaint"
regardless of what your views are can you really believe that it is right?

It's not immediately obvious why the wholly subjective opinion that it's "disgusting" should trump the equally subjective opinion that it's "quaint".

Your right , the place is Awfull, and that pub is well overrated. You think the outside needs a broom, you should see the bar! And people bring their DOGS in!!

Best stay were its nice and tidy and there's a Beefeaters. Port Solent is fabulous I hear...

Yeah, I don't get that 'bringing dogs into a bar' stuff at all. Too bad if you want a nice pub dinner and you happen to be allergic to dog-hair. I have, and I am. Here I can have a meal without dogs around and without smoke around. In England -- fat chance. Sorry guys, I think that's taking your civil liberties a bit far.

Is this where I should duck for cover?

(Even the owners of guide dogs here have been known to have been turned away from establishments because of their dogs -- quite unlawfully, and the gummint's just aired had an 'educational TV campaign' about it.)

No worries with the dog hair in the restaurant / bar as the tide washes them away now & then

Mayhap we can persuade the new pro Moderator to craft for us an 'irony' emoji, for this place sorely needs one!

You got that right, but maybe some shouldn't risk even a concrete marina? Surely there must be a nice Toby Carvery in Kettering or Dunstable? No risk of ghastly floating detritus there.

There is a white horse in Dunstable

And a very nice Trading Post carvery in Kettering, signed the contract to buy LK over a carvery there, seller even paid the bill. No unpleasant rubbish outside and nothing floating in sight. Much better than a nasty waterside where people live, work, socialise and stuff.

Mind you, I assume he paid the bill. We said goodbye, shook hands and he said to get in touch if we had a problem. He then ordered himself another drink. So I think he paid the bill for all 6 of us? If not then I'm definitely banned from the Kettering Trading Post. Have to make do with the B&O and close my eyes when passing all that terrible East Coast flotsam and jetsam.
