But your keel doesn't cant. Maybe the pivoting point for the boat follows the keel to windward, so they need to move the centre of effort to match.

Ah good, a COLREGS issue - surely the boat on starboard could have avoided the collision by bearing away a few degs ?

The boat on the left was in the process of tacking and had their sails aback. Equinox should have luffed up to clear the other boat and then lodged a protest. Less spectacular but certainly less expensive.
Is the boat on the left flying a protest flag from an earlier incident or is that a red 'class' flag?
