we have a phillips ap navigator installed on our boat. It appears to be in perfect working order, but we have no idea how to use it and have been told they are very good. Any ideas where I may find a users manual or any kind of instructions at all?

That was a quick google...

We have one still in the boat, originally "cutting edge" stuff, but really just provides NMEA for the DSC radio nowadays. Ancient but works fine for that job.
The only issue is that the little button battery which backs up memory (read maintains the almanac for satellites) can go flat. You will find it taking forever to get a fix if that happens. The battery is easy to change.

Ap Navigator

Thanks for the download, unfortunately this does not relate to our model at all.h We have looked on google, but been unable to find it. This model does not have a battery fitted and has the type apn5 on the back and comes up with F505 when switched on. Not sure which is the right number for this model.

Have you read the manual in the link given? The reason I ask is the AP may have a similar interface to the APN5 so it might give you a head start. I could be wrong.

If you have a long whip aerial then it's still a Decca and nothing can be done.
If you have a tubby GPS antenna as per the above but it doesn't work, it must be faulty and I can't imagine a repair being economic.

I've thrown 3 of these away, 2 aircraft ones and a boat one.

It has a lithium battery inside on the circuit board but a dead one won't stop it working.
F505 will be the firmware version.

Forumite Quandary can confirm that he has a manual for the Mark 5, he also has the brief Comar instruction sheets for the Leica GPS conversion including nmea wiring instructions. The Mark 5 was a very advanced bit of kit in its time and is still performing well after 30 years with a nice big display though these days its main function is to feed data to the DSC VHF and display back up position course and speed as I use the laptop with a separate usb antenna to plot routes etc.

If you require any help with specific questions for this particular model PM me and I will copy the relevant pages. It is a thick book and here is a lot of stuff in it such as displaying true wind, set and drift and all the old Decca stuff which you will not need. I can not help with any other model of Philips Navigator as this is the only one I can remember anything about.

Hi Thanks for trying to help.
All we really need is some basic instructions. We switch it on and it comes up with Settings - than we have no idea what to do. We have more modern equipment, but thought this may be a good back up. If you have any basic operating instructions that would be a great help.

I have a manual for the Phillips AP Navigator Mark 6.

No idea if this would be of any use with your machine, but you are welcome to have it. If you are interested, send me a pm with your address and I will put it in the post.

I repeat what I said above.
What sort of aerial is it connected to?
If it's a long whip aerial then the whole lot is junk. It's not a GPS it's Decca - no transmissions since about 2000. Don't waste any more of your or other peoples' time on it.
If it's a squat aerial then it's been converted to GPS and it might work - ask Quandary for basic operation instructions. Have you tried leaving it on for a while? If the internal battery is dead it could take many minutes to acquire the satellite signals.

Normally when the Mark 5 is switched on you should get a display reading 'Philips Navigator, F 500'; followed by a test screen with a row of ten 8 digits with two rows of Xs below, all three traffic lights come on for a couple of seconds then you get a red traffic light, after a short period the message 'switched to GPS' (or similar) appears and then the red light goes out and the green one lights, indicating that it has located the satellites and is ready to go. The amber one between them shows occasionally when it is looking for data. After that the keyboard is used to select the information to be displayed. If you give me some time I can go to the boat with the manual and try to divine what 'settings' means but I have searched the manual which shows almost every combination of display and can not find any display page with that heading.
Are you sure it is a Mark 5; if it is, it has a case approx 15cms. x 10cms; three traffic lights beside a four line display, with a numeric key board to the right and directional buttons under. The alternative functions for each key are selected using a 'U' or 'L' key between the display and the number panels. In total there are twenty function buttons on the front.
Please confirm the model as I can only help with a Mark5, I do not mind putting some effort in to helping you once I know for sure.

However on ebay I see this

Perhaps APN5 and AP Navigator Mk5 are not the same thing?

Need the OP's confirmation of what they have!

After a bit more searching - I think that APN5 is the small one, APN5 DS is with keyboard - not found definitive info though.
