Can any one help me, last year when laying the petter up I run the engine with the pick up in a bucket of fresh water, it was pumping ok then the flow started to slow considerably. I knew I had to replace the impeller as it is quite old so didn't think much about it.
When comissioning the engine this year after fitting a new impeller it is not pumping properly. The suction hose is sucking ok, but not much water from the exhaust. I must have a blockage or some thing.
Has any one else experienced this?

Hi Rob,

When you removed the 'old' impeller, was it intact? That is, were all the blades still 'on' the impeller or was one or more missing. If all was correct I can only suggest that the pump picked up some rubbish from your bucket that has constricted the bore of one of the waterways. If a blade was missing, it is very likely the cause of your problem.
Either way, you will need to ensure that the outlet from the pump and the pipe to which it's connected are completely clear - try gently poking a piece of wire into the outlet side of the pump and as far along the pipe as possible. A similar check can be made on the inlet side in case the blockage (from rubbish) has blocked that pipework.

You have probably tried all these ideas, but if not, it's worth a try. If you did find the impeller blades crunched, keep each bit you dig out of the system as you clean it, and 'reassemble' the old impeller to ensure you've got the lot!

Hope this helps and the problem is solved.

Good sailing!

another possibility is that one of the hoses has de-laminated and bits of the inside coating of the hose are restricting the flow.

I assume that there is a thermostat and that you have checked to see that the thermostat opens correctly??

jerry,

Spot on!! there was a small piece of the impeller jammed in the outlet pipe of the pump. I thought the old one was in one piece when I took it out but there must of been a small part of the impeller missing.

Thanks again

thanks,

found the problem in the pump outlet as a piece of impeller was lodged there.
Going to replace the hoses as you suggested as they seem rather old.

thanks for your help
