Re: Honesty please!

I have to stand alone side Happy1 here, having a V8. I m sure everyone accepts that at some point the size of the boat makes diesels a necessity over here, or financial ruin looms. But for smaller boats, and maybe thats under 25ft, for "normal" hours(and that may not be YOUR hours), there isnt really a convincing case for the capital outlay for diesels. How the hell they sell an 18ft boat with a whacking great premium for a diesel baffles me...

Re: Honesty please!

Hi,

I think part of the problem is the price difference you have been quoted, which is outrageous for a KAD 32... £10,450 more ?

As an example, the
Sealine S23 with the 4.3Gxi/DPS is £46,440
Sealine S23 with the KAD32 is £48,616
(Difference is £2176)

The difference between the VP published prices (2004) is £5430

So I would ask where on earth they get their 10k figure from. They really don't want you to have a diesel...

IMHO, it depends entirely on how much you are going to be using the boat. There is a small cloud of smoke on startup, and from then on, no smell, reasonably quiet, on a 21footer you would be v.surprised about how quickly you got onto the plane with the supercharger on the KAD32, anything left on the dash would probably fall off as you get going.

As an alternative, just TELL them to install a D3-160, it can't be that hard. £1000 cheaper and lighter too, with a variable vane turbo instead of the hairdryer gubbins.

Having bought a diesel, there is a definite mentality of trying to use it as much as possible to try and recoup the investment. Only you can decide if this is a good thing...

Re: Honesty please!

Really wanted the 2x 235hp Yanmars, but the legs would have lasted about 30 secs. That would have been something!

Might be a squeeze getting the 6 pot jobs in.

'Mudas no slouch tho. top end is 32kts cruise all day at 25/26

Who Does?

The 18' Regal i tested was the diesel version, And it did everything i wanted it to do, If i were on the market for smaller, i'd have bought one there and then.

Re: Honesty please!

Well yes, I made up my mind, but unfortunately there have been delays due to lawyers involved, I do believe that the final decision will be made this Friday. It is not too late to change anything until then, just the diesel has always been the doubt in my mind, I want one but can't justify the ridiculous extra cost, where do they get the extra £10,800 cost from? It could be cheaper to buy the petrol then immediately send it to be re-engined with a Yanmar 240 and get the trade in price back from the new Volvo they took out, OR get a Merc with Bravo 3 leg, and slot the Yanmar straight onto that /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

alistairr

is it quite fair to compare 4.3 mpi price to a 1.7 diesel ?!the 3.0petrol maybe...
used to have an 1800.. had alot of fun with it, but the size of the boat and the size of the chop in the Solent was scaring the wife to death!

Re: Honesty please!

Oh Dear, Martyn Martyn, Martyn.......

Unfortunatly it comes with age, as you found out a long time ago/forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

I tried the Regal 2460 cruiser, and 2150 cuddy on the same day as well, all with the diesel,
But the little 18'bowrider was by far the best.

Re: I wonder?

Funny you should mention that as I have often wondered about those claimed high speeds on lumpy water in a smallish boat. We used to blast our 19ft Wellcraft around Lake Lanier, Georgia at 35-40kt, but at the slightest wake, we had to slow or we were airborne and we had bruised family members. In fact they always came home bruised from the slamming.
I was on Tampa Bay a few days ago in 3-4ft seas and while we were comfortable at 22kt, most smaller boats were crawling along and the few that weren't were slamming like nobody's biz. I just don't believe this 30+kt stuff in force 3-4 for extended periods in small boats/forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Re: I wonder?

Wow Arthur, Bruised family members, must be really painful!!!!!!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

On a more serious note I think you'll find that the £ 10K+ premium that Happy talks about is because the engine is installed in the Uk with the boat being shipped less engine. Tis means that they don't get the economies of scale of buying truckloads of Petrol donks.
I agree with Happy the premium at less than 25ft probably makes it unviable.

Re: Honesty please!

I hate to add to this already over long thread, but are you not missing the point, yes you will pay more for a diesel boat up front, but it will cost less to run and it will be worth 10K, if that is the right figure, more when you come to sell it.

It will be easier to sell because it is the diesel with lower running costs.

Re: I wonder?

I rang the US this afternoon to confront them about the cost of diesel engines, I was told that diesels are not popular over there because of the cost, the engines have to be imported from Sweden, and ARE fitted at the factory in the US before being shipped here. I also rang Volvo UK and this is the current price of engines, all excl VAT :-

Volvo KAD32 (DP as standard) £12,640
5.0GXI DP £8,896
D3 (160hp) only available at this time with SX drive £11,849
D4 (210hp) £15,888

So you can do all the calculations you want but we ARE being ripped off by someone somewhere /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I make the difference between the KAD32 and 5.0GXI as £3,744 plus 17.5% vat = £4,399 /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

All these are the FULL MANUFACTURER's RRP excludes any discounts that apparently are ALWAYS given /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: I wonder?

It depends entirely on the wave shape and size. I've been out in a force 2, into wind, where the waves were short sharp and steep. Impossible to keep up any planing speed without being very uncomfortable.

On the other hand, when I went to Ryde a few months ago in a F6 or above, fighting into the huge rolling waves, you could keep up planing speed but needed huge amounts of throttle control. However, leaving Ryde and heading down wind to Lymington, it was not only possible but great fun to maintain 30+knts

As stated before I regularly do extended high speed cruising, and quite frankly don't understand what all the fuss is about. Perhaps the boats that you and Suncoast tried it in weren't particularly sea friendly?
