Hi all. My 12l petrol can for outboard is jiggered (I think) - the breather cap spins round and round and doesn't seal.

I take it I am disposing of the near-full contents which is disappointing...

...but does anyone think I can obtain a replacement lid? Drawing a blank on the obvious online sources, and it seems wasteful to chuck the whole can.

Why are you disposing of the fuel ? Transfer to some fuel containers from your local petrol station .. or get a Jerry Can like the Land Rovers use.

During summer boating season - I often forget to close the vent on my outboard tank lid ... silly me especially as I advise everyone to seal / dark place etc. !!

Is it one that's in centre of the main cap ? Sometimes they get wound out too far and out of thread. Then the spring stops you threading back in again ... I have one tank like that. What I do is press the vent screw hard against the spring and get thread started again ...

Should not be impossible to drill and tap for a larger vent screw?

Cracking idea - if you could please explain in ladybird language I would be much obliged☺️ as this doesn't leap out as a job within my limited skills. Yet. Thanks!

(I do have a power drill and can wield it)

If there is enough material around the vent hole, use the next bigger convenient size of tap to cut a new thread, to enable screwing a suitable plug down onto a rubber washer or o ring. Ideally you want a plug such as a wing bolt which can be screwed and unscrewed without tools.
It's called 'bodging' and involves making it up as you go along, using whatever is at hand in the junk box, or as a last resort buying some odds and ends from ebay....
As refueler points out, filing away part of the thread on the plug creates a path for air to enter when it's slackened.

Alternatively, fit something like this:
Barbed & Threaded Fittings 4mm x M6 x 1.0 Barbed Hose Connector - Brass 5054716581549 | eBay
with a short hose to a motorcycle one way tank vent like
Motorcycle Gas Fuel Cap Tank Valve Vent Breather Hose For ATV Bike Dirt Tub T3R6 | eBay

If it is the original tank supplied with the engine there is a good chance you'll be able to buy one to fit.
