I am seeking a company who can produce perspex wash boards for my Hunter 23' which is kept nr Ipswich on the East coast. Any ideas?

Got mine made by a firm in Colchester, can't remember the name but if you pm me I will give you directions.Cost about £60 I think

Perspex is a trade marked brand (originally ICI's) of acrylic sheet so they are basically the same thing.

Local signwriters often have this in stock although sometimes they don't stock smoked Perspex in the right thickness.

QD Plastics will do this. Web Site Here

Made a set for me that were laminated so that they let light through, you could see out, but no-one could see in. Very clever!.

They can also engrave them with boat's name or insignia if required.

Ipswich Plastics, 01473 270101. They're in Foxtail Road, Ransomes EuroPark just East of the Orwell Bridge. I got perspex from them several years ago to make washboards for my previous boat.

It's virtually unbreakable but it doesn't have the surface hardness of an acryilic and scratches more easily. It also seems to go a bit "milky" after a long time out of doors. I think there are some "impact-modified" acrylics available now and some "hard-faced" polycarbonates but I don't know trade names. We use some stuff called "Resist 65" at work for an anti-attack screen that seems to incorporate the best of both worlds!

Smash a sheet of perspex and smash a sheet of polycarbonate - perspex has shards

Polycarbonate is certainly tougher than perspex [ie. resists crack initiation and propagation] but I feel that perspex of the same thickness as your original washboards [so that it fits the grooves without rattling] would be adequately strong.

Perspex and polycarbonate may both be made from oil but they completely different materials. Perspex was created by the devil, polycarbonate by the angels, its easy and forgiving when working with it. You can break a piece of Perspex but not poly, million times stronger.

Agreed. Perspex (acrylic) and polycarbonate (Lexan etc) are different. I was saying that Perspex was a brand of acrylic sheet (ducks behind his bullet-proof laminated polycarbonate windows /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
