Personal \"Sea\" Space??????

We decided to go for a day sail from Haslar to Priory Bay. Drop the hook.Chill out, have lunch, sail back. Nicey nice. There were no other boats in the bay but, there was a boat hard on our tail obviously with the same thought in mind. They anchored, we gave them plenty of "space" and then did like wise. As soon as we dropped anchor another yacht appeared and dropped their hook between the two of us. They were only yards away (worying) and we felt compelled to shout out that we had 9 metres of line out and that they were directly above our anchor. Our concerns were they would snag our anchor and we would end up being dragged. They were that close. My point is - why is it (and it has happend on SO many occasions) must other boats insist on anchoring so close? Is it safety in numbers? Is it ...."well they are there so it must be ok so we'll do the same"?.... When there is SO much sea space, why do others have to anchor up so close? I just don't get it. Any thoughts?

Its the same with cars in car parks. If you park on your own away from everyone else you can be sure when you get back there will be cars next to you... I think its called Sod's law /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Personal \"Sea\" Space??????

you underestimate ppls stupidity ......... 'they' might think slotting next to another anchored boat is neat, but it causes such stress to the normal seaman it is f****g annoying /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Oops, should have looked at your profile first! Well there you go then, I'm surprised they didn't raft up alongside.

Re: Personal \"Sea\" Space??????

It must have been the peope who did the same thing the last time we were there. They are the same sort of people who come and sit on your head on a previously deserted beach or halfway up a mountain.

Did they attempt to put breast ropes out ?? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ps You are not from Bristol by any chance ?? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Personal \"Sea\" Space??????

This may be connected to a tendency to sail/motor through moorings rather than use the channel to one side of the moorings. Why do they do it? do they really seek to annoy people who might be doing boat maintenance, cooking etc with all that extra wash and risk of collision? And they get awfully upset if you ask them not to. People are funny ... I could get quite upset about this, but I don't - mainly because I know where the shallow patches and the concrete blocks are. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Personal \"Sea\" Space??????

Welcome scoops.

Osborne Bay has loads of room, and it was pretty empty on Sunday, yet a boat did as you describe. Anchored then fell back right over were our anchor was. Fortunately the anchor didn't set and they moved elsewhere.

SimonCR & clyst- I don't think it is appropriate for you to probe the lady like that /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hmmm. It looks like you're new to the forum and new to sailing. Welcome to the loony lot. We're not a bad bunch really, well not really that bad if you ignore the twitches and funny glasses and false moustache.

Re: Personal \"Sea\" Space??????

Had this many times - usually by boats that dont understand that a mobo swings at its anchor in a different way to a boat with a keel. Then we get the hard stare from the later arriving boat as we swing close to them /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Usually this ends up with us moving for my peace of mind - but I agree, its bloody annoying and usually completely unnecessary.

Re: Personal \"Sea\" Space??????

Osborne was fine, and lovely weather, IoW did a good job of keeping the southerly wind off.

BTW - we are in Haslar as well, end of F pontoon
