Does anyone know if the above engine uses the J1939 canbus protocol or any other canbus for the instrumentation?

I'm trying to find out if there's a way of exporting engine and/or fuel data to an NMEA2000 network or chart plotter etc.

Googling is drawing a blank, suggesting its all analogue but I thought just about any engine this sort of age (2005) would have an ECU and some sort of digital diagnostics and data handling etc?

Any suggestions?

Perkins sabre are old tech, v d o senders and gauges, I'd say not easy to convert to n m e a 2000 garmin or raymarine although one of my customers managed to convert his old t a m d 41a volvos to read on his laptop all through one little box processor, he then calibrated the laptop from the Volvo gauges, the only gauge that was not accurate was the the rev counters as they work on a pulse generation from the alternator, also voltage stabilisation or the lack of it played a big part in the process.
 
Thanks, Maretron do an analogue to N2K convertor for Yanmars and no doubt there are others for other engines.

A set of analogue gauges and controls for twin diesels seems to take up most of the room at your average helm station. Coming from a rib background, where space is a premium and having all your info easy to hand is important, I was hoping to get rid of most of the analogue stuff and make room for a nice big touchscreen plotter.

At least it won't be too difficult to collect the fuel flow and tank level data which would be handy.
 
Sorry to be negative however what you are suggesting is best described as feaseable, however not practical.

Maretron stuff is still only available for Yanmar and use Hall effect sensor for engine speed input not alternator pick up. This gear is also EXPENSIVE.

Add in the cost of Floscan to monitor fuel consumption to Maretron and you are talking big $$
 
I have no experience with your specific engine but we used a maretron converter on the rib to convert the canbus signal from the steyr to n2k readable by the garmin plotters and it worked well. Garmin were prepared to assist with some small programming protocols if required but in the end it was pretty plug and play.

Garmin also had a box of tricks that wired to the old fuel level sender cable that converted to n2k signal to show fuel tank level. We didnt get around to calibrating it as the best was was to strt with an empty tank and tell it how much you have put in t staged points. Had we kept the boat I would have done it over a winter when ashore but didn't get around to it!

With regard screen, go for the biggest you can get and ideally multi screen setup. It did annoy me on The smaller garmins that you couldn't choose exactly what each screen was showing. Would run the helm plotter with rpm / temp and would also have liked gps speed but was no option to show that along with depth.

I really liked the setup and would go all electronic again if I had the need!!! Good luck!

Expect you used the Maretron J1939/NMEA gateway box, works a treat and is inexpensive for what it does.
 
Sorry, forgot to say thanks all for your replies.

Will is right, my '05 engines are all old skool and would require sensors fitting to everything to get data electronically. I don't mind, I'm a big fan of keeping things simple.

It would be nice though to fit fuel flow sensors so I can get an idea of fuel economy, in this day and age you need to make every drop count :(

One of my customers is going to convert his kad 300 and link then to his garmin 4008 he is an I t expert and knows of the latest software to make it work, so when it's done I'll post .

My next boat should be fitted with twin KAMD300's and Garmin plotters, anything available to hook the two together Paul, or would your customers mods work ?

EDIT: Looks like the J1939 to NMEA 2000 Bridge should work, perhaps i should start a new thread.
