I am considering a boat with a 1989 Perkins P6 120hp, said to be original with no problems. I am likely to have a look at the boat next week, are there any particular issues about that engine that I should be considering.

Comments would be gratefully received.

Well, if they are 6354s, they have a great reputation for reliability and also longevity. The only problems seem to be with the (non-Perkins) manifolds and exhaust elbows. If these need replacing, I think they can be hard to get hold of. So- worth checking these bits.

Thanks. I'll check that. I understand there is a Bowman oil cooler but I will need to look at the manifolds and elbow. I can see if it is a 6354 water pumps are available. I like the idea of simple aspiration - I like simple.

From previous comments I've seen on here: avoid if it's the horizontal variant as many parts no longer available.

That situation is much improved due to good work by the Broom owners club. Although I am not sure to what extent.

The contra engines have parts availability issues.

All variants have cast iron exhaust manifolds that are sea water cooled so do rot out.

Later variants with cast Ali rocker cover and no turbo would be tough as old boots and not problematic.

All said and done it's old machinery.

Later Perkins 1006 Phaser based M135 to M300 are fab.

Tried to edit my reply and it's deleted. Bloody cracked screen on phone.

6354 is 6 cylinder 354 cubic inch.

T6354 is turbo.

HT6354 is horizontal, ie some engines installed lying on their side. Helps lower floor for headroom and lower centre of gravity etc.

Contra engines run the other way. Allowed handed props before gearboxes could do such things.

As a member of the Broom Owners Club, and owner of two HT6.354's (horizontal variant), I can say I'm not aware of any part that is either not available, an suitable alternative available, or re-conditioning available.

Both my blocks are normal rotation, so can't speak for the contras.

Hi, any chance you could point me in the direction of a couple of crankshaft dampers?

John.

Lube oil, scavenge pumps, water pumps, correct spec pistons, raw water cooled exhaust manifolds with finite life. The CAV DPA fuel pump with hydraulic governing is a lottery most parts discontinued before CAV even became Delphi did one repower for owner sick of cancelled holidays..
