Perkins 4108 sump size

That’s what I thought but I’ve been running her for about 100 hours since I bought her with no problems and it’s only when I went to do an oil change yesterday that I pumped out about 7.5litres and not being an engineer I spoke to someone who is and without any hesitation he you’ve got an 8lir sump on it but I can’t find any more information anywhere on an 8litre sump for this engine

There are various sump sizes for Perkins 4-99, 4-107, 4-108 series .... Low Line ... Full and others modified for industrial use.

As per Workshop manual for Marine use :

Standard Sump total : 4.8lts
Low Line Sump total : 5.3lts

plus 1.4lts for pipes, oilways and filters.

Note this is to mid point of dipstick range.

My 4-107 is actually an ex static engine according to Perkins - the serial number first part is Perkins but final part is unknown to them - meaning they passed the engine from production line to 'another' and has a larger capacity sump.

Thanks it looks like it might be ok I’ve run it for about 80/100 hrs with no smoking or any other problems so I would have thought if there was nearly 2 litres too much oil in I would have had a problem of some kind

What does the Dipstick say ??

Perkins engines are well known to have various sump sizes and is why Perkins themselves say to act based on Dipstick. The volumes quoted in manuals are for standard factory sumps ... which quite often are not used.

the dipstick says 8 litres. I can’t see the shape of the sump down it’s sides or at the back (I can’t get at it) but the front goes straight down instead of being a step which could mean it’s box shaped and that could account for the extra volume

It is extremely unlikely that the Dipstick will be wrong for the sump. As I mentioned - because Perkins produced these 4 series engines for so many different users .... from London cabs to farm tractors ... industrial static engines ... dump trucks ... there really are so many variations .. the dipstick is your guide.
