Hi all , I have a Perkins 4108 which is old but reliable and up to now in my 10years of ownership Iv trusted the annual filters renewal to "marine engineers" because access to the engine is pretty poor ,however ,this year out of boredom and to save a few bob I decided to renew them myself . Taking both the primary and secondary fuel filters off I was surprised to to note that they were identical IE Delphi296 . The workshop manual doesn't state the correct filters nor what the engine lub oil filter is ! So my questions are :-

1, Is it normal for both fuel filters to be the same , (Seems pointless to me and would expect the secondary one to be finer .)

2, If it is correct that both filters are the same then are 296 (or equivalent) the correct ones ?

Thanks for any help chaps .

Terry

It has become next to impossible to submit a message, the screen jumps all over the place, I accidentally deleted the previous post :(

Anyway: there are two types of 296 cartridges, identical in shape, one is for agglomerator filters, typically primary filters, it has slits into its lower side to favour diesel rotation and coalescence of water droplets into the lower bowl. A second type of cartridge (like the one on the engine filter) has no slits.
IMHO the one with slits can be used in both, the one without is better kept for the engine.

Thanks for the info and explanation chap . it seems odd that the Perkins own works manual doesn't indicate correct fuel and oil filters though .
