Going to help a friend who has less tech knowledge than me and is in the process of buying a boat with one of the above. Any tips or gotchas to look for? Allegedly has just over 1000 hrs but has had two pistons replaced (makes me a bit suspicious) It's in a 25' Norfolk Knight Motor sailer

Assuming you have a reason to be suspicious other than being told 2 pistons replaced (he didn't have to tell you). It would be worth £60/80 to get an engineer to survey the engine etc. Make sure he is certified /qualified and insured so as to claim as you would for a normal surveyer if he cocks up. To lose a boat you fancy without giveit a proper chance would seem a shame.

Have a 4-99 that went for more than 30 yrs ..... only gave up when water got into sump. Had allsorts wrong with it that I used to be asked ... you still using that ?? She went well .... wasn't my fault btw that water got in .... if more care had been taken by someone - it would still be chugging away now. The engine is standing waiting someone who wants spares .....
I replaced it with a weezy 4107 - that was cheap out of yard shed. Again I'm asked - you using that ?? Believe me - it starts well, runs well and as long as oil, water and diesel are kept in respective places - it shall run for years to come. Now that its had some real throttle and hard work - the engineer who I paid to fit it (reluctantly on his part !!) - he has looked at it agian and reckons he can't believe the difference after blowing the shite out of it.

They ae old fashioned plodding donkeys - noisy, prone to smoke on starting, but they seem to keep going ......

Anyone want a seized 4-99 for spares ..... a lot are souited to all 4 series perks ... 107 / 108 's

Cheers. Unfortunately my friend is an impecunious oap who won't run to the cost of an engineer... I'm the next best thing.
