Perfect day yesterday for vanish

I appreciate 99.5% of the forumites will be bored but yesterday was the perfect day for vanishing - starting with gentled warmth and sun - the tin placed on the coachroof in the sun to warm the contents as the substrake came up to temperature. The previous afternoon rain had been as hard as a high pressure jet so all dust had been blasted away ready; a quick run over a tack cloth was sufficient for preparation. A gentle 3 to 4 kt wind while I brushed away and then when finished perhaps doubled the wind speed to assist drying. On the mooring, so no dust about, the only distraction on an otherwise still creek was the oyster dredger dredging. Finished by 1pm in time for a sandwich and cup o tea. Oh perfick day. Now only nine similar days to finish the job ;)
 
Yesterday was a Perfect Day for me too - after days of squirming into the space behind the engine to renew/service sea-cocks, cockpit-drain hoses, cretinously located fuel filters and slicing streaks of skin from hands and elbows replacing all hoses, painting (Rust Converter), servicing parts impossible to reach if over 5' 6", the jobs are completed.
The engine is cosily tucked away and ready for the water.:)

And today I start on a lovely easy, non-contorting outside job checking and servicing the rigging.:)

It's blowing a Hooley soaking everything and everybody with high-speed drizzle.:(

Yes, it was a great day for varnishing except that family stuff prevented me from getting to the boat until late afternoon, too late to start. Never mind, there is always tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that, or..............
 
Ah - negotiated another vanish day - cost me SWMBO a bit.

Day 2 - not so perfect although (lest Robert fears I am gloating) the day looked perfick. Blue sky, warming morning. Tin heated via the sun while flatting down the vanish with 320 grit, then brush, brush, brush, wipe with a new tack cloth and to start. Port side in the shade - substrake not really to temperature and the quick build up of the sea breeze - a chilly easterly (of course) - only 8 or 9 kts but enough to cool the tin and the brush tending to drag - this can't be a final coat like that (but 8 more coats promised anyway). Starboard side - ah that's better, in the sun and the vanish flows better (but not as good as yesterday). Problem? Yeap, in the bright sun seeing the wet edge was very, very difficult. I fear there might be some holidays. But then some more coats are promised anyway. Brush away by 2pm and back to shore by 2.30pm. Patio? v hot out of the wind. SWMBO actually bailed out of the sun on account of the heat on the patio. Hey ho.

As i have a plastic boat i need to adopt a slightly different strategy.

If the Sun has been shining for a while, apply a liberal coat of lager to ones stomach. Hopefully get two or three coats on in an afternoon. In the evening, it's a bot too cool for additional coats of lager, so a few coats of Vodka are called for. Hopefully it will be nice tomorrow, in which case it's rinse and repeat :)

Edit, almost forgot, might do a quick coat of wax on the boat if the weather permits and i've not applied too many coats of lager or vodka :)
 
I think it is up-the-mast day today, if I can persuade madam to put a bit of effort in. Perhaps the promise of a gin on return will work.
 
Perfect day for a sail yesterday :p One of those days when the wind always seemed to be in a good direction. That was a 20 mile shakedown before Holland next week. Enjoy your boat prep everybody.

I always though sailors could never apply too many coats of lager, etc when the weather permits, or even when it does not permit. Unfortunately I rarely use alcoholic beverages whilst sailing (I might spill some), but I have been known to apply a number of coats of varnish to my wooden bits on good sailing days (sacrilege I know).

Two peg-legs, eh? Must make stomping around the deck noisy, and a trifle tricky ;)
