Still no excuse Mike for someone setting out to cause as much wash as possible for the sheer hell of it. And then to be seen to be enjoying the ensuing mayhem.
I m sure I would be just as angry as you, but you cant really claim that he lined you up. He may be a twat for not giving you more space (but you dont know why), but your accusation is that he deliberately attempted to swamp you.
Similarly, you took the crew members laughter to be at your expense, but you dont know why they were laughing.
I d hope it was just ignorance and stupidity on his behalf, but reporting it or tracing him down may at least make him more aware of his behaviour .
I am not going to flame you, but I think you should read the OP's post again, he says that the Mobo deliberately lined itself up, and passed him way to close, that is not the actions of any sane and responsible boater. We all experience wash from other vessels from time to time, and generally we just accept it as part and parcel of boating. This incident though, sounds like something else entirely.
The tone of your posts though does worry me a bit, are you saying tough, live with it? I have the feeling that you are taking it as just another raggie whinging about mobos, when clearly it seems, at least for most who have contributed to this thread, that it was something else, and quite justified.
All sailors expect wash from mobo's but not the behaviour described. Our home waters were the Solent for 20 years and it happened once to us. You can tell when you are being targeted. Your attitude amazes me; it only plays to the audience who want to hightlight the differences between sail and motor rather than the simple fact we are all boaters and enjoy being out on the water.
There is one boat connected to MBM that is called Penny Lane but I would find it extremely hard to believe it was them, it is a Fairline but not a Squadron.
The person involved is not here to defend themselves but when they do get to a computer I am sure they will put the record straigh on their Penny Lane.
Mike, the Redjets actually put out very little wash, and having seen this idiot first hand I can confirm that he actually creates at least as much wash as the HM/pilot.
The Penny Lane 'connected' to Motor Boats Monthly is currently in France and has been for a week prior to the incident mentioned in the OP.
The problem with 'naming and shaming' is that unless we are given FULL details, there is always the chance of mistaken identity. It is not fair on the other Penny Lane's that this post was made without full details of the boat make and model.
If I hadnt been there I wouldnt have believed it either, this guy came over to where my boat was, he crossed ahead of me from my port side to my starboard, straightenned up then came down my starboard/ leward side about 4 metres away from me, he had to be carefull on his approach as he could have got caught in my rigging, as I said, the Solent is 4 miles wide there, and there was a large expanse of empty water around me.
I come in and out of Portsmouth harbour 3-4 times a week, and the wash kicked up by faster boats makes me bump about, and is uncomfortable, but Ive never had a bow wave directed straight into my boat before, I know for certain that it was deliberate, I was sailing single handed, and luckily my little dog was down below or he could have been swept overboard.
I am upset about it but my main concern is that someone might get hurt unless these guys realise its not the harmless fun they think it is. My boat is a Contessa 26, which can handle knock downs, but there are a lot of small boats out there which would be really affected by 20 gallons of water getting chucked in it
Wiggo, I did spend 12yrs in the Solent and I was only out in the Solent the other day. The Redjet that passed us produced such a large wake that we used it to see how far a particular RIB I was testing would fly! The wake was much bigger than the average mobo. In any case, my general point was that there's so much commercial traffic in the Solent that large wakes are to be expected and any boat that's swamped by them probably should'nt be there
Probably Penny Lane is owned and helmed by a bunch of tossers but I cannot believe that anyone would deliberately aim to swamp another boat. Just inconsiderate and stupid more like
If within the ABP area, put out a VHF call Ch12 "Southampton Patrol" or request Southampton VTS to task SP to you. In instances like this, action will be taken if the culprits can be located.
Yes, the Red Jet and others do create a large wake, but the significant point here is that the ferries etc. do operate on a set timetable, and, by and large, on a set route. Also, they are pretty large and easy to spot early, so it's not too big a problem to keep out of their way or take early avoiding action. This incident is being reported as someone crossing in front of the sailing boat and then turning hard to pass down the side at less that 4 metres. That's not going to happen with a ferry, or even Pilot boat / Harbour Launch unless in an emergency.
We've all seen the TV progs about dangerous drivers, it's not at all inconceivable that that kind of berk has won the lottery and bought himself a Squaddie.
You may be right.. maybe this guy is a complete idiot and did it intentionally, though my guess is he made some course changes and ended up stupidly close to you.
Mike, The Contessa 26 has a reputation (deservedly) as a highly seaworthy boat... they have sailed many times across the Atlantic, and are regarded by most as the benchmark boat for a seaworthy 26'er....
So, its not fair, or correct, to say it shouldn't have been out there.
I doubt very much that they had 'swamping' in mind.... more likely, 'a bit of a larf soaking that little sailboat'.... which, if the case, is even worse in some respects.... and would demonstrate a complete lack of any brains.
I will add, to help ensure that this isn't a 'stereotyped' raggie vs mobo thread, that this kind of behaviour is rare in the extreme, and most certainly not the preserve of moboers alone.
Lets hope that some 'education' can be put Penny Lane's way.

Is it not?.....I'd like to see the sailboat that could do it to a mobo! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They may not be able to wash you with wash, but raggies are capable of other stupidity.
I once related the incident when I was nicely anchored, with my ball fully displayed, when a yot came at me at at least seven knots. When a big thing - 40 foot? - comes at you at that speed, you tend to have the gulp factor.
In the end he gibed, I think you call it and ran down my starboard side, nearly taking off my anchor light with his boom. If the boom had of hit me, I would have been dead.
Skipper calls out, "Have a care, power gives way to sail." And disappears into the distance while offering a balled fist. I was so shocked I didn't take his name or even utter a word.
But I was at anchor and displaying an anchor ball
So, it isn't always MOBO's.
It wasn't deliberate, but it was negligent, and we don't really know if Penny Lane was being deliberate or negligent.
Oh I'd have loved to have seen that!.......well your face really! Talk about a classic! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Seriously though, we all make silly mistakes from time to time, and luckily most of us get away with it, without anybody being hurt or boats damaged. I know what I am going to say next, will not go down well with the mobo jockies, but there is an element of them that delights in deliberately upsetting raggies........a small element I would say, but big enough to tarnish everybody elses reputation. From what I have heard on this thread so far, there is no doubt in my mind that the incident was a deliberate attempt to frighten and annoy.
Believe me, it isn't just on the Solent, but I think the Solent has more than it's fair share of these idiots, because it's so busy, and so many people want to be "seen" there.
Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back.
Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies,
Penny Lane.
I understand your concern and I as I wasnt there, I cant comment on Penny Lane's antics.
However, it IS the Solent - there ARE lots of boats in a confined space and I think that you should have taken steps to keep your belongs dry yourself. After all you are sailing in a boat on the sea with waves and turbulance from other craft.
OK - so if these clowns were driving irrisponsibly (and it seems from others on this forum that they could well have been) then it is a safey thing that would require reporting - not the fact that you got yourself and your kit wet.
I'm a dinghy sailor and more recently I've become a big motor boat skipper. Believe me I get just as frustrated as you by raggies fiddlearseing around in the Hamble as you seem to have with mobos creating a wash.
I suggest that one day, you should try picking a route through the Solent in a big mobo trying not to upset everyone.
