There seems to be a worrying practice of spicing up the motor cruise by a small minority of motorboat owners. The vast majority of responsible motorboat owners would be horrified and disbelieving of this practice, so hopefully will encourage boat owners such as the drivers of PennyLane in the Solent on Saturday afternoon, that what they are doing is dangerous as well as stupid and gives motor boat users a poorer reputation than they as a whole deserve.

The Solent was four miles wide in the area I was sailing, the winds were freshening and I was well heeled over in my little yacht.
A large motorboat appeared ahead of me, and lined itself up carefully, I was concerned as at that stage it could have easily avoided me completely by a simple 2 degree alteration of course, instead it was lining itself up, then came down my leward (side of boat dipped in water due to wind) side, really close, so close that I could identify all the occupants, the bow wave washed straight into my boat, swamping it, my handheld radio, my mp3 player and speakers, my glasses and my book, as well as my jacket, were left in a pool of seawater, and the occupants of Penny Lane were watching behind them, laughing and waving as they zoomed off.

I was left trying to keep the boat steady with one hand, I was still well heeled in the breeze, keep my ballance and grab all my belongings out of the pool of water filling the cockpit seats, with the other hand, only able to throw them into the main cabin. My book and MP3 player and speakers were destroyed, my handheld radio thankfully waterproof but now thrown into the cabin to get it out of the water, was now out of my reach. My coat was soaked through on the inside, I still had another four hours to sail, shivering because I was soaked through.
It might have been a bit of sport to them, livening up their boring motor home, but it is such a dangerous thing to do, I am hoping that the responsible motor boat owners that the majority of you are, will help the irresponsible drivers to realise that what they are doing is stupid and dangerous and does nothing to improve relationships between sailors and motorboaters.
(To Penny Lane, you owe me an MP3 player, speakers and a book)

If within QHM jurisdiction report them. Next time they might hurt someone. If you had had a novice guest on board who knows what the outcome might have been

That is just plain sickening! I would be inclined to go after them, QHM may be able to help?

I doubt QHM cares if his attitude to the pilot boat is anything to go by. That regularly passes very close to boats whilst kicking up its massive wash. Overtook us about 15 metres away in the approach to Portsmouth harbour and I don't think anything has ever rolled us around so much.

Well done for naming and shaming. Hopefully someone here will know the boat and will have words.

Absolutely no excuse at all for such behaviour.

When we were Solent based we reported a Portsmouth Pilot boat to QHM, they bounced us around a bit - 38ft sailing yacht but the boat ahead 25 ft ish sailing boat with young family were in trouble. QHM acted very quickly and for a while it was noticeable that behaviours changed. If it is not reported then QHM will not have the opportunity to act.

Shame - cos you had a huge smile on your face as you left the harbour - we were on our way in ....

My only "moan" of the day was - why do those exiting the harbour feel they have to take up the whole virtual width of the small boat channel? Several sail boats were on their way out and SWMBO felt that she couldn't keep in to the side ... so I took the helm and drove straight at them (massive wash from our boat - all of about 2" !!) - it was the only way to get them to move in - I didn't want a bollocking from QHM patrol - and a X channel ferry was following us in ...

I just checked the users list on here, yep! I know it was a long shot, and no they are not on it, at least not as "PennyLane"

Touchy aren't you, of course he wants help from you! You can't blame him for saying something a little snipey. If it had happened to you, you would be feeling the same.....would you not?

I have heard of car drivers who think it is funny to deliberately drive through puddles at speed to splash pedestrians. Any decent copper who witnessed such an act would bring a charge of driving without due consideration.

What you experienced may have been a manifestation of the same type of juvenile behaviour but, on the water, it can be a lot more serious than simply getting a soaking.

As you have the name of the offending boat, I do hope you make a complaint to QHM (or relevant authority) and that it is followed up with the person responsible receiving at least a good bollocking.

Thats really not good and since you have the name of the boat I hope the skipper is made to feel the heat from whoever you report it to.

However, I dont see how one boat/crew acting like a coplete twat is 'an alarming trend'?

More like an isolated tosser.

There's been much mention of reporting to QHM... but I strongly suggest that you report the incident to Southamton Marine Police and the MCA. They could ( and I stress could as it depends on the agencies point of view..) be prosecuted for criminal damage and dangerous navigation. I used to be in Maritime enforcement and I would have taken that on as a criminal damage and/or dangerous navigation. The MCA will also have access to the small ships register and insurance database so should be able to find them... cheers Iain

If I'm not mistaken, Penny Lane is a Fairline Squadron driven by a bunch of complete tossers. They seem to have found the perfect combination of spped and trim tabs to throw up the biggest wake of any mobo I have seen, and regularly pass within a cable of boats anchored in Osbourne Bay.

If you look here: http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/mars/ship_search.sh#start you'll find only 3 'Penny Lane's listed as motor boats. Not sure how you can pursue them from there though. I wish you luck finding him as he's a liability.

Yup, sounds like Penny Lane was being inconsiderate but it never ceases to amaze me that some yotties sail in and around the Solent without expecting waves. The wake from a power boat is small compared to the wake from a pilot boat/Redjet ferry/harbourmaster's launch/tug and myriad other commercial boats. If the wake from a powerboat is enough to 'swamp' (your words) your boat, I have to ask whether you should have been out there in the first place because it sounds like the wake from a pilot boat, for example, would have sunk you
All IMHO and I guess I'll get flamed for this

I did have a site bookmarked where you could look up a ships name/vhf details and it would tell you limited info about the owner. It gave the owners name, thats about it but its a starting point. Annoying thing is I deleted it from my favorites when I had a clear out. Have a search on Google or maybe someone else has it saved or knows the web address.....
