Are the threads on pelican hooks fine? I am trying to replace my pelican hooks, but want to match the present threads on the terminals which are swaged on. It isn't a standard M6 or a standard 1/4 inch, but close in diameter to these.

Three things you need to identify a thread:

- diameter

- threads per inch (or pitch, i.e.distance between each crest)

- shape of the thread (i.e. are the crests and troughs sharp, rounded or flat)

Then if you look in thread tables (probably available on-line or ask on here) you should be able to identify the thread

I think 1/4" UNF is the most likely bet if it isn't metric

Which type is yours?

How old is the hook? If by "standard 1/4 inch" you mean 1/4" UNF, could it be old enough to be 1/4" BSF? I know from bitter experience that Gibb were still using 1/4" Whitworth in 1976 - anyone got a source of small 1/4" WW machine screws to hold the drum onto a Gibb winch?

How about Stig's Fasteners?

I am sure I have bought Whitworth machine screws from this firm in the past

I've bought lots of stuff from cars there - excellent prices, very helpful. Unfortunately, his BSW stuff is running out, and the only 1/4" listed are rather long with the wrong heads. Still, needs must and I'll give him a call tomorrow to find out what he can do.

Thanks for reminding me!

My pelican hooks are of the newest type in the photo. The boat is 1984. I can see now that the 1/4 inch bolt that I was trying for size will have been UNC and the hook will be UNF.

I am in New Zealand and the hooks don't seem to be readily available here, so it will be a mail order job. I am keen to make sure I have the right specs before I order.

Thanks for the responses.
