Peeing in Marina

This is all a bit of storm-in-a-teacup.

How many of you who wouldn't pee off a bathing platform would pee while swimming in the water? If you say that you've never done it I wouldn't believe you. It all ends up in the same place as has already been said, so what's the difference? Just one of appearances of course.

Of course, you are totally correct.
Peeing off the duck-board in the middle of the night, watching the phosphorescence in the water, in a totally secluded, remote anchorage is a great reminder you are out in the wilderness, but having some guy hang his wang out in front of your family at point blank range, in broad daylight tends to get me a little cranky....

Glad i don't frequent such places, i'd get arrested on a regular basis. If someone did this close to where my family were swimming, he'd be joining them, with a fat lip.

I didn't say that I did it, but that I have seen it done - in Mallorca, Barcelona, Various ports in SoF, as well as most marinas in Brittany, and Cherbourg, and in Turkey too. I didn't take too much notice, and certainly wouldn't get hot under the collar about it. Its part of the local colour.

At the risk of repeating myself till blue in the face my comments relate entirely (read the thread) to taking a dump (not a pee)over the guardrail into an anchorage full of swimmers. I totally refute your notion that this is a normal part of boating culture or local colour as you delicately put it. In fact I personally have never seen it done anywhere UK or abroad.
I spent this afternoon in a superb unspoilt but busy Greek anchorage. It was very hot and almost every boat had swimmers in the water. Anybody, of any nationality who dropped his pants and cr**ped over the side would have been lynched. The port police would then have issued a punitive and well deserved fine.

So glad i don't bother with marinas, and prefer the solitude of dropping anchor in secluded spots, can also wind the music up without offending anyone.

One of the best i saw was in Turkey, four local men peeing off a rocky outcrop while a boat full of tourists including children was anchoring for them to swim. Suddenly a RIB came around the corner at full tilt and suddenly turned on full power, it drowned all four of them and washed them into the sea.

The tourists all began throwing whatever missiles they could at them, empty bottles, the works.

So from a bit of pee which would be hugely diluted in the sea you now have a sea full of plastic bottles and other detritus. Hardly a good example to set the kids. Not to mention the act of using a RIB as a weapon, potentailly causing the blokes real harm. Just suppose one could not swim or had cracked his head on the rocks?

Just desserts i say.

Just now I was sitting at the chart table with the boat in it's home marina and spot an oldish gentleman hanging around on the pontton finger. So I head up into the cockpit to see if I can help in any way..

His response was that he was looking for somewhere quiet to have a pee but he had noticed that my boat was occupied. Somebody else who was presumably his mate was taking a leak at the end of a nearby pontoon

My home base has a small marina and the facilities aren't that far away for a Sunday afternoon especially as the marina is in full view of the clubhouse lawn

Better than a nubile nymph Sh£ting on the transom of the boat next door --- when you are swimming....... Just too much for me

One has to keep up appearances doncha know old boy? ;)

This not true, it is not "totally the norm". Don't forget we were talking about cra**ing directly into an anchorage full of swimmers, not peeing in the marina. This I assure you, after cruising extensively in Northern France, South of France, Italy, Greece and Turkey is not a normal part of boating culture and is not acceptable. It will be met by howls of protest wherever youre seen doing it, no matter what your nationality is, so please refrain.
Notwithstanding your spirited defence ofthe French, you might like to reflect on the fact that the discharge of toilet waste directly into the inland rivers and canals of France is still 'permitted' despite being outlawed by EU law since January 2009. Vitually nothing has been done to provide pump-out or other disposal facilities. Holland is a bit better in this respect but something of a blind eye is being turned there, especially in view of the number of small boats in which the fitting of holding tanks would present insurmountable problems. So in many places, it is 'normal' and 'acceptable' and any 'howl of protest' would be definitely sotto voce.

I'm not condoning discharging human waste into inland waterways, but think about how much farm animal's excrement from paddock run-off adds to the bacteria count as the rivers run through countless properties and countries.

As the OP, I am not too concerned with pee in the water, there are all kinds of **** (excuse the pun) in there already. I just don't want to have to watch someone do it!

Exactly. The view taken 'over there' until now is that it is all organic material and the fish etc will deal with it.
You've only got to watch the huge shoals of sardines that congregate around the ends of discharge pipes in Portugal to put you off seafood for life!:)

Soap and detergent discharges have been regarded as far more serious but boaters dont think twice about taking a shower on-board or washing their boats.

Exactly.

Now your talking. We have always had good intentions to use eco friendly detergents etc, but can you buy them in Greece and Turkey - we have not seen them.

It would be great if some serious research and advice was given on this matter, as I suspect that the contents of a 4 day holding tanks discharge is far worse on the environment than a newly laid T.....

Good use for an Air Gun

OK. I know this is a very old thread and propbably the only people now reading it are Mods and visitors but I could not refrain from telling the two stories from my past that still make me howl.

1. My brother used to take his air rifle with him to sea and use it to shoot at floating debris for target practice. (He was good too)

As I read about people sticking their bums over the side and dumping a dodgy one in public I suddenly realised the real value in having an air rifle aboard and what a great deterrent! No real harm done. A bruise. A sudden shock. A dart to remove and a lesson learned. Also, close to silent so hard to spot the sniper! ;)

2. Many years ago when I was at the tender age of 19 my then g/f decided to ask her dad to join us on her boat for a trip along the Northern coast in Cornwall. Neither her dad nor I had been to sea before but she was an old hand thanks to her ex fisherman grandad.

Her father began to feel the need to shout RAAAAALPHHH! and indulge in the technicolour yawn of sea sickness on a regular basis within an hour and by two hours was so miserable he went below for some kip.

After arrival I was standing on our moored craft just off a tiny deserted beach I was having a crafty pee off the stern when he emerged from the depths of the boat, almost silently behind me. He called my name and so startled me that I turned to see who was speaking (having forgotten he was even on board) and peed all over the g/f sunbathing next to me. She screamed. Her dad laughed and I fell off the boat. You could not have scripted it. The timing was superb. :D

Yes. She forgave me but she made me scrub the aft deck down first.
