Considering putting in an offer for a Pearl 60 moored in Spain with BCUK.

Boat looks lovely, but I'm concerned about the recent court case with Pearl and the hull weakness.

Was this a one off? Would it put you off buying the boat? Would a thorough survey be enough to set your mind at rest?

from what I recall (could be wrong), the external recess in the hull for the P brackets was not reinforced on the inside to maintain the overall hull thickness. Should be possible to tell with a survey if this particular boat is the same or could be modified if you really like it.

Thanks for the quick reply

So will definitely point the surveyor at these things. Do you think the lack of layup/reinforcement is indicative of a wider quality issue and other build issues could be lurking in places unseen?

Will a good thorough survey show up all the knowns and the unknowns?

Ian Smallbridge, the Pearl MD, knows every Pearl sold. He is a useful person to talk to, as he will know the history of this boat, and should be able to put your mind at rest ref hull thickness.
 
Hi, we've got one, bought it nearly 2 yrs ago when all that was going on, all indications are that the damaged boat was the exception, we know ours does not exhibit the same characteristic. As above , Iain Smallridge on 01926 491069 knows all of them and is a very nice and helpful guy. If Cannes is on or preparing he may be out there though.
I know everyone thinks their own boat is the best , and we are no exception to that rule, we absolutely love ours, the layout is fantastic , quality of everything appears first class and she runs like a dream.

We were also very interested in a Pearl but they just do not sell! I have followed several for the last 5 years and are still on the market, the fly bridge does not help as it's quite small anyway just be aware that you might struggle to sell in future!

(which I really like by the way, but they are also a bit sticky on the used market)

If it's 'Sea Vision', they've been trying to move it on for some time.
 
It could be, although I was thinking it was Chloe Helena, which looks fab if the photos are current, but Lady Sproggit is now well worth a look as she's just had a must sell price put on her and I understand she's also a very nicely kept example.

Hi I’m thinking of buying Chloe Helena witch has been sunk now due to P brackets Breaking off as the hole was only 5 mm thick when it should’ve been 20mm where the P brackets and bolts onto the hull. Do you have any information on this boat or whereabouts you see it for sale originally trying to contact the original owner
 
Hi, sorry, cant remember where it was for sale , that was a couple of years ago now. Are you sure you want to take on a boat of that scale that's been underwater ?, that would be quite a task to recommission , maybe look at one of the others up on brokerage ? Was that the Pearl 60 that was driven over the reef in Santa Ponsa.
IMO it wouldn't have mattered if the P brackets were stronger, she would still have sunk.
It seems though that the courts saw differently.
All rumours though.

I think this one might be the one that was allegedly driven over an allegedly 0.4mtr rock shelf just off Portixol.
 
There are really very few rocks to hit in Mallorca.

The Magic Cat got the Portixol rocks as well. The news said they had no idea what had happened. The local facebook forums knew exactly what had happened !

I was in Santa Ponca last year and a newish large princess went between the bouys on the reef. I thought if he is daft enough to do that he probably would not appreciate a bloke in a Willaims telling he had escaped disaster by an inch and a half !

Thats my impression too. For that reason, any Pearl should be bought for a price that is considerably less than the equivalent size of boat from bigger manufacturers. Not saying anything positive or negative about the Pearl 60. Having looked over a couple myself, they are nice enough boats but there's no getting away from the fact that finding a buyer when youre done with it will be difficult so buy it cheap

As others have suggested, Call Iain at Pearl - I have been looking at the Pearl 80 and asked him the same question about the boat that hit the rocks and his answer was very honest and very credible.

Cranchi has a much wider audience then Pearl ever had and will have. Similar to the Brit-three in most countries and many do broker good prices.
Then above a certain size boats always take time to sell, because nowadays berthing and maintenance are not cheap.

If marine and yard prices where 50% cheaper boats would sell double.

The Pearl 60 had two problems delamination and seperation of structural grid in some areas. The first to check and be sure it has not you need to do a full hull scan with 3D scanner.
Not all surveyors have that.
