PDA versus Laptop

Many thanks for that input.

....I would use a handheld GPS and paper chart. I know that is not one of your options but just what I prefer and I am no dinosaur as Electronics Engineers, PC Whizz...

I've survived a couple of decades of 'decidedly-focussed' mil aviation with sticky-up cloudy mountains and determined locals taking pot-shots with 2 x 23mm, another three decades of periodically-challenging boaty nav with owners of varying hues exercising their death wishes, and the old adage works for me - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

I have *no* intention of finding myself on the briny, up 'S*** Creek' without a usable chart. I carry - always and everywhere - enuff reliable HO nav stuff to get me back to a reasonably confortable pub, regardless of what the idiot electrics are up to.

Some kit, you can trust with your ass and your inheritance to work first time, every time. Manual-operated lifejackets, screwtop bottles of Guinness, Martin-Baker armchairs, Chinese copies of the AKM...... MS Windows XP is not part of that worthy tradition. Nope!

Nevertheless, I'm thankful to Nigel et al for good suggestions in good faith. I certainly intend to try 'em, over the coming wee while, with considerable interest. But not blind faith.

Steve is correct though ...

The PDA that is picc'd on here is fine when in shade or cabin ... once out in cockpit with bright sunlight - it literally becomes unreadable. Under the sprayhood - the contrast etc. has to be up full. It really comes into its own when in evening / early morning or night-time when you can have it in hand etc.

One of the niggles with PDA's are the connectors for power / data .... they are generally flimsy, fall out with slightest touch .... all in all fine for sitting on the Works Desk - but when out there ... YUK ! My PDA connectors are the most useless ill-thought out - that includes Palm as well ... as I use a Palm M515 colour as well as the Jornada .... I have yet to try the car mount ones ... maybe that will improve it ???

Another possibility is the Mio 168 or 268 combined GPS and PDA ... this takes expansion cards similar to my Jornada / Palm and can have not only the road stuff that comes with it - but you can input Maptech PDA nav or Ozi-Ex etc. as you want ... but again daylight viewing is limited .....

My preference is the Notebook PC .... pick up a cheap IBM Thinkpad 600E .... double up the memory, connect 12V straight in ... it's compact, rugged, and will provide a very good platform for nav .... Mine has even been upped to Win XP .... OK it's slow if you want to do any applications on it - but the nav is fine ... chart changes / moving map is excellent ...
