Many thanks for that input.
....I would use a handheld GPS and paper chart. I know that is not one of your options but just what I prefer and I am no dinosaur as Electronics Engineers, PC Whizz...
I've survived a couple of decades of 'decidedly-focussed' mil aviation with sticky-up cloudy mountains and determined locals taking pot-shots with 2 x 23mm, another three decades of periodically-challenging boaty nav with owners of varying hues exercising their death wishes, and the old adage works for me - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
I have *no* intention of finding myself on the briny, up 'S*** Creek' without a usable chart. I carry - always and everywhere - enuff reliable HO nav stuff to get me back to a reasonably confortable pub, regardless of what the idiot electrics are up to.
Some kit, you can trust with your ass and your inheritance to work first time, every time. Manual-operated lifejackets, screwtop bottles of Guinness, Martin-Baker armchairs, Chinese copies of the AKM...... MS Windows XP is not part of that worthy tradition. Nope!
Nevertheless, I'm thankful to Nigel et al for good suggestions in good faith. I certainly intend to try 'em, over the coming wee while, with considerable interest. But not blind faith.
