I am quite sure this has been covered before, but I am unable to track back any further and find an answer, so here goes.
I have a Magellan GPS12 and as a back up I would like to interface this with a PDA with basic chartplotter functions. I think I will need to use a Pocket PC? What software is recommended and is it possible to plug a GPS handheld into an IPAQ for example without buying a GPS sleeve?

I have an Ipaq and I'm using Fugawi. BTW, there are all sorts of cable interfaces available. Look on google. I went to Radio Shack (USA) and found for $30, a hockeypuck sized GPS that works like a charm w/built in mapping sotfware. Cheap price becauise they've been trying to dump them. Otherwise, get a GPS CF card for about $180. I prefer Fugawi w/ENC charts downloadable for free from the US government. Can't say what's around for European waters. But Fugawi is available online. Best part: they let you use scanned copies of your favorite paper charts. You make a JPG of a paper chart w/scanner, import to the Ipaq, and it interfaces w/the GPS. Not bad for $99.

How about the suite of marine navigation tools available from NavStation that includes tidal prediction, passage planner, chart plotter and ships logbook (automatically updated from your instrumrnts) plus much more.
