Thanks Brendan. So, in theory at least, there should be a lot more stallites for the sets to choose from. I suppose any situation grave enough to cause the Yanks to degrade positioning would probably bring a similar response from the Euro guys, although it may take a little longer for the commitee to debate the issue. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

That'ts the idea. I think what will happen in reality, is that dual sets will evolve, capable of taking both gps and galileo signals (even though galileo will be putting out gps compatible signals) as galileo is more accurate than gps.

Given the committee will include so many countries, it would be like getting the UN to agree on something! :)

Um, aren't GPS sellatites geostationary, and theretofore don't pass over anything, but really just jiggle about on the spot, rather like someone who needs the loo really badly?

Catch 22 also close to St.Petersberg

The UKHO chart of the approaches to St.Petersberg has a very similar "catch22". One notice says (I paraphrase as the chart is on the boat) We dont know how the lat and long on this chart relates to WGS84, mariners are advised to confirm their positions by other means. The second one says "many of the ais to navigation in this area are missing, without topmarks, unlit or out of position.
