Patterdale Terrier?

I say again, Dogs on boats.
They have to be taken ashore twice a day to empty them, whatever the weather. Not safe. Not pleasant. And please not on my land.:(

Patterdales are great dogs!

This is Monkey our Patterdale, he's great with (our) kids. He's very territorial and but can be a bit grumpy but he's a lovely chap and very easy going. A bit of a handful when he was a pup but I'd put that down to high spirits.
He's now 8 and recently taken to like afloat, he's not that keen on the engine noise, who is. Not terribly keen on our postman either (we call it kissing with teeth).

Patterdale Terriers

I have a 2 1/2 year old Patterdale - they are great fun, have a real character and are incredibly smart (our last dog was a Springer Spaniel - loved sailing and had no brain, a perfect match to me!). As a puppy ours was manic and chewed everything, she has now calmed down a lot and has this season enjoyed a few day trips out.

We have her in a lifejacket all the time onboard and have a long lead that we attach when she is in the cockpit. Be aware that they were designed to locate and where possible hold prey (that means birds, rabbits etc.) we sail on the rivers of the East Coast and thus this can pose some challenges.

You need to be bold and ensure you establish yourself as Alpha early on. That does not mean you need to be aggressive in any way - just firm and consistent.
