I can't get Patio Magic here … wanted for mossy looking stuff on the teak swim platform in a difficult to access part under a life raft canister which I'm removing … 'next best thing' suggestions please? I use the normal Wessex 2 part teak cleaner stuff for the platform which is good but this mossy stuff soon comes back. It's not actual moss but more like staining but I reckon it's fungus of some sort! Anyway, any suggestions appreciated.

I'm afraid that I don't know what's available in France. Anything containing a reasonable percentage of benzalkonium chloride will work as that is the active ingredient in Patio Magic. Products will mention surfactants and perhaps other things but look for benzalkonium chloride.

You can buy benzalkonium chloride (BAC 50) on eBay, just dilute (a lot) and add a very small amount of detergent. You should find BAC 50 on French eBay if you can't find a suitable product in a shop. I think that Patio Magic is about 5%-6% strength versus 50% for BAC 50 but would need to look it up.

Remember that it is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. It is fine once dried into the wood, just a problem with the initial the run-off. I used it when ashore anyway as most growth was over winter.

Thanks Mistroma, I'll check it out.

Edit: Just checked French E-Bay ….. BAC 50 - €20 for 250ml … perfect, ta!
No problem. I did see a claim that Patio Magic was 7.5% and I diluted it about 3-4 times. A 2.5% solution sounds about right and if you are buying 50% strength it will go a long way when diluted by a factor of 20-25. It should produce approx. 5-6 litres dilute solution (plus a drop of detergent), pretty good value for €20).

I see that their website says "Because of ridiculous new EC regulations, Patio Magic may no longer be used to kill moss." That is fine as I am certain you will be very careful to not put it close to any moss. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Just realised that €20 for 500mls 50% might not be such a great deal in UK. Not such an issue in France if you can't get Patio Magic.

Your post reminded me that I was going to use some on the roof but was a bit low on stock. I was going to buy BAC50 because I remembered it being cheap many years ago.

Patio Magic documentation says 7.5% but their MSDS mentions 5% - 10%.
Diluting BAC50 to 5% would yield 5 litres and 7.5% would give you 3.3 litres for £18 from eBay

Lots of places selling 5 litres of Patio Magic for £18, making the eBay price more expensive.
Even worse, Wilko price is £6 for 2.5l and that's way cheaper.

The I spotted that Homebase had an offer of £22 for 2 x 5 litres, making them even cheaper than Wilko (at £24 for 4 x 2.5l).

Only problem for me is that I'm miles from a Homebase. I have a Tesco delivery coming soon and ordered 2.5l for £8.50. I'll probably use Wilko if I need more. I was surprised at the range of prices and that BAC50 doesn't seem to be a good deal nowadays.

If you have got an ALDI near you, then try Doff patio cleaner, it is very similar to patio magic and contains the same active ingredients (and cheaper, at least is here in UK).
Angus

I have used that and it works on the conservatory roof at home and on my driveway - in fact very effective but I did get the timing right . Dry day with no rain.

Yes, needs to be dry for several hours after treatment. The small amount I have left at home is actually Doff, not Patio Magic. No real difference in effectiveness as both contain 7.5% w/v BAC. Unfortunately, I rarely see it in our local ALDI but only visit 1-2 times per year.

Doff stuff is only 2 litres vs. 2.5 litres for Patio Magic and can't remember how much ALDI charge. Might not be a lot cheaper than Wilko or Homebase prices. I couldn't find a price online.

Plenty of Patio Magic on my boat but unlikely to use much of it when sitting in a boatyard in Greece.

I think the Aldi (Doff)stuff was good value - £2 perhaps for 2 litres . A handy size to keep on the boat if wanted although I don't as i use it at home more than on the boat . Unfortunately not available all the time.

Not a bad price at The Range

I have also used Doff weedkiller at home which was vert effective so its brand I now look for.

I didn't realise that The Range sold it, we have a branch nearby. However, it is £3.99 for 3 litres and says ready to use. I couldn't find any detail but guess that means it is only 2% strength. Certainly one comment on the site mentions the fact that it shouldn't be diluted and that made the Aldi version much cheaper.

The Range ready to use stuff would work out at about £10 for 2.5l, making more expensive than Patio Magic's full price.

I did eventually find it from ALDI Doff Path & Patio Cleaner 2L but it says "no longer available".

It is amusing that folks with boats are quibbling about a few pence and pounds. Surely in the scheme of things the cost is infinitesimal against moorings, fuel, sails or whatever. Chasing about to save sixpence is bonkers.

Thanks for that Vic, I didn't see it on their web-site. I have actually ordered some Patio Magic from Tesco and I get my food deliveries from them anyway. Useful to have a backup in case I need more for the roof and Tesco run out of stock.

It seems to be more about availability these days, many things I'm trying to buy seem to be out of stock. I like to know enough about things I need in order to buy a suitable product. It would have been annoying to buy the dilute version of Doff and not have enough. Equally irritating to be waiting on BAC50 from eBay and later discover Tesco would deliver Patio Magic.:D

Pretty much reliant on deliveries for a while yet (70+, hypertensive, auto-immune disease) but still hoping to back to my boat later this year. I doubt it will be worth launching but at least I might get some work done and check for any issues.
