The Malaysia Airlines flight had a filed passage plan, and also automatically sent out its position every 30 minutes or so.

Despite that, and with a large number of planes, ships and satellites looking, it seems impossible to find the plane.

So what chance do we have if we set off on a voyage and file a passage plan with the coast guard or any one else of being found if anything goes seriously wrong? After all they are not going to use anything like the resources they are using to find the plane to look for us.

Well it wasn't following the passage plan, and the cruising speed is 100 times faster than a yacht, so it really could be anywhere in a huge area.
It would indeed be harder for the CG to find a yacht that had moved 250 miles in an unknown direction!
Camelia beat me to it
