passage plan

[ QUOTE ]
I'm being advised that a copy of the passage plan should be left with the marina people.

Do you agree?

Who is advising you?

AFAIK, a passage plan doesnt need to be in writing, and doesnt need to be left with anyone. As people have said, the marina and Coastguard wont take any action if you fail to tell them you've arrived, (most people forget or dont bother, so it would result in hundreds/ '000's of false alarms).

I make my passage plans in my head, with routes on both chart plotters, weather from several sources, and a full awareness of ports of refuge.

Best thing is to have someone ashore who knows where you are going and when to raise the alarm if they dont hear from you.

having said that, as things can change rapidly, and communications can be difficult, you will probably have been in, and out, of trouble by the time they raise the alarm.

Cheers

While there are lessons to be learned from incidents with commercial ships and fishing vessels its the lesuire craft section thats most relevant for us.

You link gave me Fishing Craft.

Also look up previous years as many different problems each year and especially the Ouzo incident unless you have followed comments on here.

Regarding communications.

1. You should have VHF radio (preferably with DSC)

2. If possible add a waterproof handheld and give it to watchkeeper/helm

3. Its a last resort but get mobile phones in waterproof bags and remember even if a mobile is slightly out of range for telephone calls an emergency text message to another mobile may get through.
