Parsons Bend

Yes I know there could be some strage posts on this one!
I have an old Mecedees instalation that has a Parsons bend on the exhaust system. The cooling water is back flowing (i think ) when the engine is not running filling it with water. Turning off the water at the intake solves this. I presume the Parsons bend does something to sort this and is not doing it!!
